Well you can use a other chat client like Virc. Its quite simple to set it up. http://www.visualirc.net/download.php

the irc server is: darkstar1.tzo.com

I have downloaded darkstar1.tzo and am still unable to get into the chat rooms

Not sure why, you should be able to get to the chat room but just selecting it and not here for the boards, going that way it asks for your ID and your in.
