About the wasteland that is TV.
Arizona has a great program during high school to get kids into trades like construction, care giver, etc. Our son is a gearhead and got his diesel mechanic cert. That is honorable work and I have no problem with it. But I also know he likes money (not physically, but how it works, how debt works, etc.).
So my work was in one of those periodic slumps as he was getting those certs. There was a resource finance conference in Vancouver that I thought about taking him to, except no money. I thought about using it to teach him to stay in your financial limits.
Call it a soap opera, but I was raised pretty rural and have worked a lot with ranchers, so the soap I can identify with is ‘The Ranch.’ In one episode the rancher and son are having a beer and Dad talks about a year or two before when he could have done something for his son, but used it as a lesson in staying within budget. The rancher explained that he now realized it was at exactly the time in his son’s life to do it and a year later when they had money it was not the right time, so they never did it. He told his son how sorry he was now.
My approach to parenting is to expose them to things and let their mind lead them (wife nicely takes care of the bitching approach, thank you).
At the time I was thinking about telling my son about that Vancouver conference and that we were not going because we had to stay in our resources. But I did have slack in the credit card account and, thinking about the lesson from The Ranch, used the credit card to take him to Vancouver.
That piqued his interest and upon graduating with his diesel certs he became a bank teller and in six months became a banker. Now two years later he just got his mortgage banker license and is taking courses to finish his BS and hopefully I can help him go on to a MBA in business/finance.
All because of TV.

Lets see. Developed a rotary dial kit. Is working on an open source company for robotics.
I think I will just crack another beer and think about what a slacker I am.
