For better or worse, another part of the West which has largely disappeared.
Take a stroll up 95 heading north from Vegas and there are still the the two at Paolo's favorite hangout, Pahass, and the Alien at Lathrop Wells. A short detour to Ash Meadows and you will find ruins. Then it starts to thin out There is still the wreckage of the old Lockheed twin Electra at the landing strip in front of the now abandoned Angel's on the north side of Beatty. The pilot must have ground looped when he shouldn't have. There is the trailer out in the middle of nowhere at Scotty's Jct. that used to advertise as putting the wild in the wild West on the Goldfield radio station. I stopped out of curiosity maybe five years ago to see wheat was happening since they quit advertising. One guy there and he said he was thinking of re-opening as a Christian summer camp for kids. As I left, he asked if he could bum a cigarette. Ah the Cottontail Ranch at Lida Jct. The madam, Beverly Harrell, battled the Bureau of Land Management, was elected a county commissioner and even ran for state representative. She has a neat fenced off grave in the Goldfield cemetery. What a lady! When Bobbie of Bobbie's Buckeye Bar in Tonopah died, her relatives came up from Vegas expecting to find some kind of retail business. They were horrified and shut it right down. There used to be a cafe, gas station and whore house at Basalt Jct. west of Tonopah. Now they are just concrete foundations. Jog west and both the restaurant and motel at Montgomery Pass and Janie's down the road as close as you can get to Bishop, CA and still be in Nevada are empty. Go back to Basalt Jct., head north and there is the Wildcat at Mina. My General Theory of Everything pretty much covers it all except how to get lucky at the Mina Club. At least when you flame out, you can head over to the Wildcat. From there north it is pretty much the same story until you get to Reno-Carson City area. Sure you can divert out to Salt Wells, that well lit garish pink palace in the absolute middle of nowhere, east of Fallon if you want.
Ah the 50's and 60's.
