I wasn t sure what was going on with him. I decided I d much rather risk being fooled than to not get the guy in touch with suicide prevention resources if he turned out to be really in need. The internet being what it is, you never know what s genuine and what isn t. You re not even sure if the person writing something actually believes it to be true, whether it is actually true or not. So caution and being somewhat guarded are necessities online.
Another possibility is someone who might periodically go off of their psych medicines. I had an experience that illustrates that sad situation. There was a very nice woman who would stop by and visit with employees on a daily basis. She was quiet but very friendly and shy. One day she appeared agitated and distressed. When asked she said nothing was wrong. But minutes later she was talking to herself and becoming very emotional, obviously lost in delusions and in a world of her own. It frightened other customers. One female employee very gently and quietly took her aside to calm her down and find out what was going on. It turned out that she had lost her job and had gone off her daily psych meds because she couldn t afford them. This caused her to start melting down.
Luckily most places in the USA now have government social services or non profit help for such people to help keep them on their meds, short term, to fill in such gaps. Once this woman was connected to such resources, she got her meds and very quickly returned to her normal self again. Whatever delusions she was having when she went off her meds were real to her at the time, and seemed to be real in her own mind. So, you never know what you are dealing with.
Thank you to the faithful moderators and members on here for trying to help people when they come to this site. A site built on trying to offer help, advice, and safety to the people who come here. I know I d have a very tough time trying to sort out kids goofing around online, verses mean spirited hoaxes, verses psych problems, verses real but very strange situations. I m glad and very thankful the moderators on here are willing to do that tough and necessary work.
