I can't remember if I have mentioned this or not, but I am an Air Cooled Volkswagen fan. I prefer them for their simplicity, this does not mean that I have had good luck with them, but it does mean the repair parts are still available, even though the car is a '72. I also drive a 1990 Mitsubishi Mighty Max, I'ts silver, I would paint it green, to be a Green Mitsubishi with a two pronged crown.

- My Dad's first new car was an early 70's entry-level bare-bones Dodge Dart. Transmission fried in under a year, he had to pay part of replacement; and the tranny blew again about two years later. Somehow, he's never owned nor said a good word about a Dodge since!

My first car was an 8 year old 1978 Toyota Celica, standard trans, factory cruise; dear lord I loved that car. Treated me fine, gave me 7 years or so, died a slow death when I had no money to spend on it; last trip it had a top speed of about 40 kph and zero compression... I glided it into a hidden corner of the back acreage and it may still be there.

My worst car; mid-90's Pontiac Firefly. Three cylinders, two years old, low mileage. An unmitigated piece of rancid shit. Even brand-new, the seller told me, it could not keep the windows clear if it was colder than -20c with more than one person in the car unless you rolled the window down. Impossible to pass with on highway, invisible to everyone in the city. One (big) redeeming factor; I rear-ended a huge old Plymouth Fury III once. I put a good sized dent in his rear bumper and knocked it partly off. The Firefly had just a tiny scratch on the rubber bumper. Go figure!

My first car was 197x VW Super Beetle. 2 tone orange/rust. I spent all summer cleaning up the body with a friend down the road, robbing his cousin's body shop next door. Of course, Cousin knew what we were doing, and found it amusing.

The Bug had broken heater control cables. Yes, I had heat and a LOT of it! That part is a MYTH, trust me! Other than the rot, and a deformed brake drum that clunked when braking, it was OK. Never mind that a man over 6' tall had it, and the driver seat was stuck all the way back. At 17, I was so small that I had to have a pillow to sit on, and blocks put on the pedals so that I could reach them!

Next was the 2 door Ford fox body Fairmont. People laugh, and it's been rated as one of Ford's worst cars, but I never had a problem with it. It rode and drove like a baby Lincoln. I honestly would love to find another of the 1980 era, although that's probably not gonna happen. The seat was just perfect for me, and when you're a 5'4" teen, it's a huge car.

Then came the 198X Mustang. How that car didn't kill me has to be put up to an act of God.

Teenager + Mustang = total f'in disaster!

Four engines later over 3 years, and she had to go. Thus did I enter my truck phase, and have stayed there.
