I agree, Santiago's dad is someone I'd like to write more about. I can sort of understand selling my son into slavery provided I really needed the money and my boy was agreeable. But what if money wasn't the issue and the boy just really wanted to spend a year as a slave? Would I sell him? 🤷 I don't know. 😵‍💫

On a side issue but still on the subject of slavery, I had an interesting conversation the other day. I was talking with a Jehovah's Witness who insisted that the Bible was the actual word of God. I pointed out that the Bible condones slavery. To this the JW got really hot under the collar and insisted that biblical slavery was a wonderful institution where the slaves were treated very well and were very happy.

I asked him if there was a candidate running for public office who wanted to restore biblical slavery would he (the JW) cast his ballot "yes." The man told me that since Jehovah's Witnesses don't vote he wouldn't take an interest in the election anyway. Perhaps next time I should ask him about biblical castration and child slavery. 👉

The next time that you’re infested with Jehovah’s Witnesses, you might try the method I used to get put on their Black List so that I was never visited again. While the couple across the street were Witnesses, it was always other members of the church who trolled our neighborhood about every other week.

One day a young Witness couple and their two young children showed up at the door. I invited them in for a discussion of the Bible, which they firmly believe to be the correct and true word of God. I pulled out my copy if the King James Version and opened it to Matthew 19:

[12] For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

I then pointed out that the verses immediately following were those said by Jesus immediately after he proclaimed that there were eunuchs made for the kingdom of heaven’s sake:

[13] Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

[14] But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

There are theologians who claim that verse 14 gives Jesus’ approval for the castration of children.

While they were still in shock, I turned to Revelation 14:

[1] And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.

[2] And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

[3] And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

[4] These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

A number of devote Christians (I didn’t say that they were the Russian Skoptsy) have interpreted this as meaning that the 144,000 elect of God will all be eunuchs who had been castrated before puberty so that they would remain virgins for all eternity.

The young couple and their children fled from the house, and I was never bothered by Jehovah’s Witnesses again. The neighbors across the street were only ritually polite after that....

I used a similar method on the Mormon missionaries, using a quotation from Brigham Young.

Exodus 21:7 “If a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not go free the same way that a slave man does."

So when a father sells his daughter it's for keeps. But when a dad sells his Jewish son the boy is to be freed in the seventh year. That's not fair! :(

If I had been a younger sibling visiting, I would have been insanely jealous of the nude children running around. I would have very likely begged to stay right then, regardless of age.

And to not have a boner get in the way of running about and swimming and such? Fine by me!
