River,
If you're taking 90 to avoid weather... well California no longer has weather. At least any that worth mentioning. We've had a total of 1 inch of rain so far this season, so no worries about getting across the Sierra's (you won't have to look at you kid like he's a steak), and the only significant issue you may encounter would be descending the Wasatch in Utah.
Oh wait, that might be why you're on I-90... avoiding Utah. Can't say I blame ya.
PM me with where you'll be in California. If you're headed to the Bay Area, you and I will be closer in location that you might think.
I'd love to meet you if the opportunity is there.

Sounds good LT,
I90 through South Dakota then WY50 to WY 387 to WY 259 to Casper, then WY 220 to Rock Spring then one to I 80 as we enter Utah. Then its I80 the whole way.
The weather looks real good once we get out of Minnesota so no matter which way we go we still need to do that.
To answer Moi's Question no were not driving straight through its about 30 hours, we have on board a dog and an old man both who must get out and stretch, water and wee every few hours. Plus I am not fond of driving all night so we will make a couple stops along the way.
Departure is at 5:30AM which is half a day before Moi opens his eyes.

I think we have made all the changes were going to make, I35 south to 90 to Casper Wy (yes I know its not on 90) where we will spend the night. Then on to 90 to Reno where we will spend the second night, then on to our first of several destinations in California.

Looks like you might hit rain Sunday night there in Casper, Wy

And with temperatures hovering around freezing, various consequences.
Do you have windshield de-icer and tools?
What of survival gear if you have to spend a night in a sub freezing car for whatever . . .
Be Prepared !

I used to live in Casper and Rock Springs. Most of my family lives in Rock Springs. Muddy Gap is a crappy way to go in the winter, the snow piles up on the road because of wind and many times will be closed. It's also the most dangerous road I ever traveled. I have been forced off the road 4 times because of oncoming traffic passing when it was not clear to pass. If the weather is bad, take I-25 to Cheyenne and I-80 the rest of the way. It's only a few miles longer, but much better road. Of course you won't get to see Independence Rock, but it's not really that great anyway.

Thank you Elizabeth, it looks like the road is dry and free of ice and snow and snow drifts per the state of WYDOT however hwy 25 to Cheyenne has several minor problems plus 80 in that area has problems. We plan on spending the night in Casper so it will be a game time decision. It would add about 3 hours to the trip which I am not overly happy about, and the thought of taking I35 to Des Moines then taking 80 the whole way is just out of the question, I have driven that road through Nebraska and OMG, SD and then into WY is a much better nicer drive. Its been a rather warm winter in that part of the country this year, unlike the Twin Cities which is cold, looks like when we leave it will be hovering around +2. SD and WY in the 40's which will seem like a heat wave to us and it gets warmer the whole trip.

Taking yesterday off was the right thing to do, mentally and physically, I was totally exhausted but today I am back on it and everything is done that can be done today, tomorrow will be busy and some last minute packing but all in all it wont be bad.
I can't believe it, this will be my last night here, tomorrow night at talula's and the day after that in Casper WY, then Reno, then Calif.
