Can't help wondering if Target endorses McA?
(They said that they tested for altered files, and the usual ways and more for pen-testing/prevention. I'm wondering where they hid their badboy. Maybe fuzzed something in a vendor account?)

We had a lot of trouble with McAffee at work, because one of our customers put it on their machines and made a mess of things (I think it was slowing the systems down so much that various processes would time out). At home I have Fedora, which is built on SELinux. That seems to be a much more effective and better-integrated approach. The only downside is that the NSA assists in the development of SELinux, so we just have to hope the non-NSA developers are smart enough to catch any vulnerabilities the NSA folks try to sneak in.

I still can't say enough about how I adore Malwarebytes, the paid version. It's pulled my butt out of the fire more than once.
