Preferably no, in my opinion.

I for one do surf w/o Javascript on occasion and chose not the run Flash or utilize Java as a mater of course.

Perhaps a CSS layout, sidestepping scripting issues?

Thanks for all the hard work,

I work with Insurance Underwriting and Mortgage clients, with LOTS of sensitive info. Many of these companies use Java Scripting and Active-X controls in their websites. Virtually all of them use Windows platforms -- Microsoft products. We also use Microsoft Security Essentials (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... s-download) (free).

If your PC is Windows-7 or above, and IE-8 or above, there should be no problems with running Java. The user can dictate permissions for Java as with Active-X components and programs. Go to the Java.com (http://www.java.com/en/) website for more info.

From WIN-7 'Help' menu -- Internet Explorer's Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Filter can help prevent one website from adding script code to another website. XSS Filter watches how websites interact, and when it recognizes a potential attack, it will automatically block script code from running. When this happens, you will see a message in the Information bar letting you know that the web page was modified to help protect your privacy and security.

If you are unable to run scripting, what you probably have is too high a level of security, or Javascript is 'disabled'.

From the main menu (Menu Bar or Command Bar) select Tools->Internet Options->Security tab.

Click "Custom Level."

Scroll almost to the bottom of the new window, and locate "Scripting".

Select the 'radio' buttons as follows;

"Active Scripting": set to 'Enable'.

"Allow Programmatic clipboard access": set to 'Prompt'. This means something on the web site is "copying" to memory - generally harmless but could be a virus attempting to populate memory via clipboard. You should set to 'prompt' so you can know about it and cancel if necessary.

"Allow status bar updates via script": leave 'Disabled'. This is the bar at the bottom of your screen and is used to show link locations when moused over. Javascript can write stuff to this bar. I disable the status bar for more room on the page/screen. (Right-click the mouse at the top of the page -- select, or deselect 'Status Bar'.

"Allow web sites to prompt for information using scripted windows": I leave this 'disabled'.

"Enable XXS filter”: set to 'Enable'.

“Scripting of Java Applets”: set to 'Prompt'. Applets are rarely used any more, you can 'disable' this, but it is no threat in WIN-7.

Click "OK". Restart I.E.

For users with older machines, you can still activate Jave scripting; but get a good security protocol. (Windows Defender (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... -utilities) is free, and Security Essentials works with XP w/ Service pack 2-3.)
