Plain and simple, when people lip off at me in person, I punch them. When they pull weapons, I shoot at them. Most of the time, I hit them, too. Road rage? Yep - that's why I RAM them with my big-ass new Dodge truck when they annoy me.
THIS is TYPICALLY AMERICAN ... deal with it.
My comment about probably not being able to find a US surgeon willing to do the said procedure was made in point of eliminating THIS area from the search, and it sure as hell didn't deserve the snotty reply that it got.
You can't tell me that if I replied to a post by saying, "Oh, how typically German," or "Oh, how typically French," or "Oh, how typically Outer Mongolian," with some other comments like his, that I wouldn't piss someone off. "Well, they don't know any better, they're just ________(insert nationality) is not a suitable reply to a valid post. The comments made that as Americans, we tend to think only of ourselves, is a gross delusion.
Look at all the money that the USA has pumped into other countries, as A-1 so eloquently states. And what do we get for it? Said aided country taking a shit on our shoes at every chance they get. And I'd also like to know how many zillions of American dollars are flushed down the proverbial toilet every year by those well-meaning but dumb enough to believe that those charities for starving children worldwide actually DO something for the said children.
If the whole batch of 'typical Americans' actually thought like this, then you can bet your sweet bippy that we'd have just stood by and let each and every situation that we've helped, or tried to help, resolve, just sit there and burn while the innocent suffered.
We could have sat by and let Hitler have Europe while simply going and taking revenge on Japan. Likewise, we could have left the radiation-mauled Japanese populous to fend for themselves in the ruins after we got done trouncing the government. We could have let Saddam Hussein have Kuwait, et al, and the list goes on and on. Of course, I'm sure that there's also the arguement that in doing so, we were only looking out for OUR own best interests.
And don't even throw the Arab oil issue at me. In one or two growing seasons, we could produce enough corn alcohol to run all of our vehicles with. A simple re-tune of the motors is all we'd need, we'd have more jobs, a better economy here, BUT we'd also be wrecking the economy of those 'less fortunate' countries in doing so. Even though it would make our own lives infinitely better.

WAR!
Okay, we need to rally the troops and take over the whole fucking planet.
It is no longer Planet Earth, but it is now Planet U.S.A.
We start off by getting Canda on our side. After all they are pretty much a little USA. We work our way down Untile we have all of South America.
Once all of North and South America is in our full control, we take a year or two off to regroup and rearm. During this time we let whichever countries wish to become a state of planet USA to join.
Then once ready we go to work on the hold outs.
Instead of countries it is all states now.
Whate state do you live in?
Why I just hapen to live in the state of Australia, mate.
Now that we have won, and we are now all united under one government, we no longer have all this diffrant lauguage bull. We can now all talk and understand each other.

As you know, before the Great War the planet America was a shit hole to live in.
But then the Great State of America got sick of the bull shit and put it's foot down, and put it down hard.
Now, thanks to our forfathers we are a great race once again.
we no longer fight each other. Instead we are peacful. We have cured everything from a simple cold to AIDs. Instead of fighting, we are feeding. No one goes hungery. Because the dollor is so much stronger now, instead of a boy paying almost a full dollor for a small candy bar, that same boy now can use the dollor to buy 5 or 6 very large candy bars.
People work because they want to and enjoy what they work at, instead of working somewere or work at something do NOT like, just becuase of the money they earn will pay the bills. Like me. I work only 12 hours a week as a tour guide and over a 100 years ago I would of had to work for 9 or 10 YEARS at a job i would hate to ear what I earn in 1 weeks work now.
Over 100 years ago, we were close to nuking the hell out of the planet and kiling everyone and everything alive, now adays we have terraformed Mars and have discovered a new race of humanoid type people on another planet. And I am sure you all know that, Yes, they have been here many time before in the past, and that all thoes anal probes was just a joke.

Oh yes sir, it is true. Way back then, men had a very hard time having there parts removed if they wished. Now adays we are more enlitened and not only remove them, but late if he chooses to do so and has his parts stored, they can be reattached.

That sounds like a rather idealistic point, but there is one thing more to it if you transfer it onto modern nations:
If you are SO big, that means 100th of times bigger in power in comparison with another nation you simply cannot say:

America as the only "super-power" left is the best example but still just an example:
If America farts half of the world will stink. (probably more )
A country of some critical size&power simply IS involved.
So MY oppinion:
By helping weaker nations a powerful AND civilised country not just serves it's own wealth or acts altruistically but it minds it's very own damn bussines!

I just happen to cultivate my private illusions on the basis of my temporary "unknowing" (is "ignorance" in english (as in german) more "intentional unknowing"?).
In your case(es *s) that means I just keep thinking that in "eye to eye situation" or in case of "important decisions" I trust you to make the "right" decision.

I just think I like you, A-1 and Paolo in this special case, simply as persons and that does not go away just because you have a different oppinion.

You can take whatever position you like, as long as we can still TALK about it. And if, by chance, that should become impossible the confidence is still there. It might just not be so interesting any more to TALK.

I come from the country of the holocaust and have grown up in a time when it was talked up a little clearer at last, even in school.
The thing you ponder as a teenager is of course:
"How did they justify THIS in front of THEMSELFS?"
The question comes up again and again of course at every new occasion, every knew act of war and death and each time it leads into complex matters so that you easiely get caught in it and may even start discussing where you should have been saying "No" right from the start.
