I've never understood why people pay $175 per month for the "utility", there is no reason for it.

Gee, I'm glad I'm not thin skinned. That provided me a day of giggles thinking of various answers that will not appear here.
Let me ask this question -- how the hell do you know I have "no reason for it?" ...
Are you, perhaps, clairvoyant?

I tried Comcast but I had them take it out the same day they put it in when I found out that I wasn't even getting any HD channels. Turns out that's extra. To me that is like charging extra for stereo. I bought a digital antenna and it works great. I only pay for Internet and phone, and Hulu + which allows me to stream all kinds of stuff.
The other thing I don't like about Comcast is that they want a two year commitment but the interductory rate is only six months. After that, it's "If you see Kay, tell her I called". So no thanks.

Well, if you think you need it. I think my point is nobody needs cable. Is it nice to have? Perhaps. Is it a necessity? No. I got rid of mine years ago and am happy I did. I can put all that money to better use like investing and what not.
I'd like to retire at some point, possibly to Europe or a nice warm beach. *grin*

Those would be great options except for one thing, if you play RPG (role playing games) like wow you must have faster internet speeds.

I use a wireless internet service $49.99 a month. Local provider with excellent service its got enough bandwidth to run two wow accounts at once and stream online video, it does have a baseline 40ms ping that can't be gotten around but it beats dial up and crushes satellite (no cable here). Its run of cell towers, so you probably have something similar where you are.

I get internet from COMCAST and the price has remained the same for over two years. At least since I got my HDTV service in 2009.
My problem now is the Pay Per View stuff that if I am not careful adds big bucks to my bill.

My provider is CableOne. HD channels are free, as long as you get the non-HD version of the channel also (so there are some channels in the HD tier that I cannot watch, like NatGeo, because I refuse to pay another $10 a month for the non-HD "value channel package").
My Internet price recently went up... but only by about $2. I get 50 Mbps for the first 50 GB per month of download bandwidth, then if I exceed 50 GB (which hasn't happened yet), it drops to the "standard rate" of 10 Mbps for the rest of the billing cycle. With cable and two HD tuner boxes, it works out to about $120 a month. Not too unreasonable.
If it were just me, I'd get rid of cable and stream the shows I wanted to watch off the Internet, and my monthly bill would be cut in half to about $60 a month. But my mother lives on the other side of the duplex and is 80 years old. You know about old people and technology; after getting digital, she called me at least once a day to "fix her TV". (She kept forgetting to hit the "Cable" button on the multifunction remote after turning on the TV, so when she changed channels, it wasn't on "HDMI 1" anymore. She finally decided to just hit the "Cable" button *every* time she changes the channel, just to make sure.)
