That means if there's one state that prohibits discrimination, the company will prohibit it everywhere. I worked for AT&T, which had a written policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual preference. They even formed a committee for gay employees to explain sensitivities to senior management, and a Vice President came out and was publicly praised for it. I think AT&T is typical. This doesn't reflect any special liberality. Big businesses want to avoid any legal trouble or bad publicity; they want everyone to be a customer or employee without interference. Individual managers are obviously still bigots, but now they have to go underground. Their prejudices are no longer respectable, which is progress.

I totally agree, 3 different places I worked I had a gay boss, two were some of the best I ever had, we wont go into the third on but she finally got herself demoted and went to sell real estate. Point being from about 1970 on gays in the work place was common and totally accepted in every company I worked for. Bob is correct, big business wont tolerate discrimination - bad for business.

Are you familiar with the "work" of the "Reverend" Fred Phelps, lately of Topeka, Kansas? You really need to be in touch with him, he and his gang of bigots would like nothing more than to find a confessed homosexual who felt God was cursing them. The "Reverend" and his group from Westboro Baptist attend funeral of service men and women, young children and anyone else they can work into their busy schedule of hate and let the attendees know that their loved one or friend was being punished by God because homosexuals exist. I'll bet, they're never ones to miss a moment of publicity, they'd let you mock crucify yourself on their front lawn and proclaim whilst roped to the old rugged cross that God did this to you, the "Reverend" was right. Does this strike you as hurtful? Un Christian? Impolite to a fellow....then I make no apologies for what you have done is tell me I should be condemned for my sexual preferences and, Sir, I will never be demeaned by someone who disagrees with my essential person because they feel they are persecuted.

I work for a large corporation. I know of several openly gay guys just in my area. No one discriminates against them. Neither do any of them feel any need to hide that they are gay. I don't know about every where else, but in Oregon, it's not an issue.

I live in an area where it is not widely accepted. The last job I was fired from no one came to my aid after 15 years of employment. Gays are still considered immoral and if they are accused of something there is an automatic assumption of guilt. The president of the hospital was very homophobic and one Christmans he was shaking employees hands and thanking them for their hard work. He extended his hand to me but quickly drew it back. People are okay thinking it but they do not want you to confirm it.

Sorry to hear that. We actually have laws here in Oregon prohibiting such discrimination, and whether someone is gay or straight is a non issue. Any boss that discriminated against a gay person would likely be fired.

In Ohio it is legal to fire, deny housing oh hell it would be easier to say we have no protection from discrimination.

And family members regardless of the state can and often do discriminate.. Family members can make your life miserible. Their greatest goal is to hurt you in every way they can.

And now it is your time to reclaim your life. I have to work hard to keep the memories in the past and in perspective. You have to forget or realize they were wrong in what they did to you. They are still in your head and you are allowing them to continue hurting you. Learn and value yourself because you are not what they said you were.

I had to take a restraining order out on my brother. Sad, eh? He kept telling me his behavior wasn't because I'm gay, and then pulled that humdinger out, "I have a lot of gay friends". OK, good for him. Doesn't mean he's any less an a-hole. I would commonly overhear him talking to other people calling me "That faggot", and other derogatory terms. Odd behavior for someone who has a lot of gay friends.

He was trying to use my homosexuality to drive a wedge between me and other family members so he could get the family patriarchs money. He didn't get really bad with me until I sat him down one day and told him that he should stop worrying about money that wasn't his. At the same time I also told him it wasn't mine. At that point he stepped it up from general harassment to I was conspiring to take all the "family" money. Um, it isn't family money, it belonged to the person who earned it. Amazing how people will accuse you of doing exactly what they themselves are doing to try to deflect eyes off themselves.

Fortunately the rest of the family is fine with me. He didn't get the money when the person died. Neither did I, it went to his sole immediate heir as it should have and I'm fine with that.

Painful though it be, the task then is "And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them," Then go forth and create your own family. Something too many trans and gays have to deal with.
