Have you considered the possibility that he was perhaps just mentally ill, of the sort that randomly terrorize strangers? His comments, while menacing, weren't explicitly homophobic. Perhaps you personalized the interaction and assumed it had some personal meaning when it might have just been sheer chance that you were the focus of the barrage. (whatever the reason though, it's understandably upsetting!)

If he was really homophobic then perhaps it's more likely that he would have directed his aggression towards you both, rather than just towards you? Maybe, maybe not. Some people just don't like other people, or get out of the wrong side of the bed. But in anycase that was vastly unfair for you to have to put up with such a verbal barrage. Good to hear that you are going back there again next Sunday.
