In the 20th century japan was hit by the H bomb, now in the 21st century they have been hit again by leaks from the power stations, lets pray it will not get any worse for them.

Somehow I doubt he was attempting to minimize Chernobyl.

Just point out the foolishness of people in North America going mental over the thought that they will somehow be contaminated by what's going on in Japan.

If a truly horrific event like Chernobyl (which was closer to the US than Japan is) failed to irradiate the east coast, then exactly how likely is it that the so far relatively minor* events in Japan are going to hit the west coast of North America, much less the heartland or east coast.

*Relatively minor only in comparison to Chernobyl. I'm not attempting to minimize the scale of the disaster, but so far it has not come close to what happened in 1986. It's still a major disaster.

Well that was unfair but we all have a bit (an atom or two) of Chernobyl in us. So much of the reactor core blew up and burnt in the atmosphere, the pollution circled the globe several times.

What will reach the USA from Japan is airborne particulates. They won't be enough to hurt anyone that we'd notice more than an minor uptick in cancer rates. Perhaps a fish or the next gallon of milk will have a few atoms from Fukushima. That's harmful.

It is more harmful to breathe it than to eat it. The I-131 will be through quite a few half lives before it makes its way into beef, produce and cow's milk.

Basically, the exposure from reactor byproducts and general contamination from that source in America will be below threshold for all the known Cancers. I am aware that theoretically there is risk but it is so low that it cannot be measured statistically and therefore any justifable estimate is small compared to the background exposure that exists naturally in nature.

The GREATEST exposure of humanity to ionizing radiation is by far from diagnostic medicine.

It is best to leave these calculations for CDC in Atlanta.

Too many first hand account of a kid going "odd"

One got it from the MMR but as a young adult seems to be more social.
