Now, don't take offense, I was just thinking that it is the person who is stupid, not the place.

I agree, it is the people who stay in danger zones, and then when something happens like the Quake, or a Hurricane...when it is all said and done, people will be leaving right back in the same places they started...certainly most don't have a choice, but I think the ones who annually rish Hurricanes usually DO have more options.

Wonder if any study has been done on the statistically safest place to live.

In the US; In the world. Might turn out to be the most boring place to live.

I remember years ago this church left southern California because of earthquakes, they did there research and found this mountain top in Tenn. to be the safest place in America to live, they moved there, build a new church and set up their town, YOU GUESTED IT, they had an earthquake.

Which only proves that IF there is a GOD, he has a morbid sense of humor. :D

Batman (imported) wrote: Sun Mar 13, 2011 1:45 am It isn't supernatural it is science. If you live in an Earthquake prone area, it isn't shocking when they happen. Same goes for people who live on ocean front property and get repeatedly hit by hurricanes..just nature + people living in stupid places.

I can't help but echo this sentiment in some ways.

Places where it regularly floods, for example. You see people on TV explaining how year after year their place gets washed out, but they're determined to rebuild on the exact same spot.

Now, I'm not the brightest bulb at times, and as much as I might like living where I am, about the third or fourth time my home got wiped out, I'd probably figure out that I should probably relocate to where that kind of thing doesn't happen on a regular basis. Yet some of these people keep staying there.

Earthquakes aren't quite the same thing, to my mind. At least, not on the west coast of North America. Sure, there's a huge one that's overdue, at least by some reckonings, but it's not like it happens on a regular basis, and indeed, the big one might not hit in my lifetime. If it does, I'll absolutely be willing to consider moving somewhere outside the danger zone.

I suppose it has to do with the human need to conquer their surroundings. I know people who insist on living in areas that will flood. One reason for her is that it is cheap and that it is paid for.

Another reason might be because South Florida is GREAT MOST of the year, and Hurricanes and Tornadoes are pretty localized devastation. They are a risk that people are likely to take to live in a mild or seasonal climate.

Just to clarify...I feel horrible for the people in Japan and elsewhere...what I get annoyed about is when people talk about God's punishment and all that crap..

I understand. THEY use God to blame the victim. It is an old ploy...until it happens to them...

If one believes in that sort of thing, it would not be a bad thing if a big tornado landed on the Westboro Baptist Church sometime around 10am on a Sunday.

How is that for hate, for hates sake.

'Mountain top in Tennessee' struck an ancient memory in my mind. Wasn't there some kid from there who kilt him a bar? And is Tennessee still the greenest state in the land of the free?
