Why not to a 're-imagined' Robin Hood movie? One told from the other side of the story.
Telling the tale of poor, beleaguered Prince John, doing everything he can to run the country his brother doesn't seem to care about. Dealing with the terrorist known as "Robin Hood", a true villain, who claims to rob from the rich to give to the poor, yet doesn't seem to do anywhere near as much giving as he does taking...

OK, its been a fun filled weekend and I am still reading the book, I am about 2/3rds the way through and so far Robin has a minor role. I keep waiting for them to start robing from the rich etc, and the only thing the have done is steel some seed and plant it. I am still enjoying the book but its not the robin hood we have all been told about over the years.

Two things about Robin Hood movies:
1. Prince John always gets a raw deal. The poor fellow was trying to hold England together while his irresponsible brother King Richard the Lionheart was messing around in the crusades. I suggest the crusades are the most pointless military adventures that England has ever got involved in. Also Prince John was the fellow who gave the English speaking world the Magna Carta.
2. The best Sheriff of Nottingham in any Robin Hood movie has been Alan Rickman. I loved his villain with a dry sense of humour.
?
To an extent, Kortpeel is right in that John gets even worse treatment in the movies than in life. He was known as 'John Lackland' because his father left possessions (England to Henry, Aquitaine to Richard) but nothing to John. After Henry III died, Richard became king but he spent virtually no time in this country and his crusades and subsequent ransom from the Austrians virtually bankrupted the country. In addition, the french possession were gradually whittled away. Their Parents, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II nominally owned about three fifths of France between them but Richard lost almost all of that.
However, John did not give the magna carta. Because of his chronic shortage of money he was always at odds with his nobles. He was trying to get money and they were trying to keep it. They forced him to sign the Magna Carta thinking it would make them exempt from his taxes. It was purely self-interest on their part they did not appreciate the far reaching effect of that document and most, including Simon de Monfort, carried on behaving as robber barons.

I actually LIKE this idea a LOT!
Not that I am a well read scholar or Robin Hood expert, I don't really care if people think Robin Hood (the REAL one) was a good or bad guy, or that Prince John, or the Sheriff of Nottingham were good guy or villains. I don't really KNOW the history of it that well.
By the way, thank you very much Colin, I did not know any of what you just told us. Seriously, thanks for the history lesson.
Now, for a re-write of the Robin Hood story, I do honestly believe that the inverted Robin Hood could make for a VERY good and interesting story... Have to call our new anti-hero Robin Castor though. Robin Castor and his band of virile men, who galavant all over the country, "Castor"ating the nobles and impregnating their women.

And apart from that who is Russell Crowe? Wasnt he one of those uncouth Scots who mooned us in Braveheart?
Hooray for Kortpeel. Prince John received the raw deal in history while his brother, King Richard I, ruled badly. Richard I served from 1189-1199 and was only in England the last two years.

I agree. Let's see a movie where Prince John is the good guy
brother is off galavanting in the Middle East killing Muslims in the name of Christianity.

Finished, the book, Richard is dead, the French King as gone back to France to fight another day, King John dishonored the deal he made with his nights, the Sheriff got what he wanted, Nottingham, Robin got what he wanted, Marion and the lost boys, (which I thought was used in another story), and drops his last name and becomes Robin Hood and lived happily ever after in Sherwood Forest.
And this is how the legend began......
The last line is a quote from the book,
Look for the sequel in a year, I see this as a three part.

I saw the movie today. It was a Robin Hood prequel, not a Robin Hood movie. As River said, expect to see the Robin Hood movie as a sequel to this one.
It was OK; lots of action; possibly preferable to sitting through another Robin Hood movie. It didn't leave me champing at the bit to see the sequel: been there; done that.
