I think the reputation points can serve a purpose. I'd like to see them turned back on but only for the parts of the forum that are relevant to castration, being a eunuch, gender issues and so on. Nothing related to politics, humor or computers...

The problem here is that the forums are not "reputation selectable". You either have rep for all, or none. This is a good idea, but members would be "on their honor" to not use the rep system in the Political or similar areas.

(And we can all imagine how well that will work!)🍑👋

Also, this poll will run for 2 weeks from post date.

Reputation will remain off until then.

Allow only positive rep. Negative rep can be turned off, unless the rep system you have here that allows all the stars and pips doesn't allow that. The vBulletin regular rep system does allow turning off negative rep.

I agree with Jema that it is not a perfect system, but they may have value in lending credibility to what long-term members have to say. Particularly to newcomers to the Archive. As to the not perferct part, I have seen members with very few posts quickly wra
tugon (imported) wrote: Mon Nov 23, 2009 8:56 am ck up large point totals. I suspect this is uncommon.

I voted to turn the rep points back on as a guide for new members. As I stated in another reputation thread when I was a newbie I would give more credence to advice from a member with many reputation points than I might with another newbie with a low rep. Of course I have a lot
of rep points so that may shoot a hole in my argument.😄

I agree with both Jema and Tugon, although I have fewer points than either! 😄

By the way, the points are still being displayed. It is the little squares and stars that are not now visible.

I see in my first post I stated something like 'points are still visible.' This is not correct; it is the number of posts that is still visible.

I just voted, and even though I have read the well though and persuasive posts of some people who I like and respect who are in favor or restoring the reputation points system, I voted "No - leave the points system off."

The reason that I have voted to do away with the reputation points system can be perfectly seen when you visit another website, one that I once was a very active contributor to: Answerbag.com. That site exists for one real purpose, it is a place for underdeveloped personalities to get some fake self esteem by accumulation of points. I once had a "user name and profile" there, same name as here "DeaconBlues," but I changed my user name there to "Anonymous" as so many others there have done. The "answerbag" website is SERIOUSLY infected with some very sick people (i.e. TROLLS) who leave the most insulting and useless remarks. For example, someone might post a question on a controversial subject like "open marriage" or "should I forgive my wife after her affair?" and the "answers" and even worse the "comments" towards other reasonable answers degenerate into the worst sort of name-calling and accusations. You cannot even answer or ask seemingly simple and harmless questions without seeing some truly vulgar comments attacking you.

Yet there are some there who have REALLY gotten into the accumulation of reputation points. One user/profile there who I think perfectly epitomizes the "underdeveloped personality" who is desperately seeking the approval and FAKE respect of others is "Scubabob." I do not like him one bit, but I do truly feel sorry for him, he is really seriously into becoming a preeminent expert in his field there, and I strongly suspect he is a person who has nothing of any real value in his real life. That is why he feels a great need to brag excessively about himself, and gain what little ego boost he can on the internet.

The Eunuch Archive stands out in very sharp contrast to the undisciplined and poorly moderated Answerbag website.🙏 Here I have never felt compelled to post anything "anonymously," and while there have been a very few glaring examples of vulgar verbal attacks, there is only one that I can easily remember, and the "flamer" (i.e. "markdf") was quickly banned, never to return.🍑👋 Here at the EA, we can ALL OF US, participate in candid and honest discussions about anything we care to. There are a few posters who seem to regularly find themselves on the losing end of a dispute, but no one here is made to feel inferior because they do or don't have some silly "reputation points."

Now I know, the points system of little eight-point stars and pips does not of itself cause "flaming" or abusive behavior, but it can be very attractive to the sort of underdeveloped personalities (i.e. PRICKS:dong: )who regularly engage in such things.

"I have twenty stars and I outrank you! You must bend to my superior reputation points!" 😄

I used them as shortcuts for new members. I don't care about the total points just that it is some indication of participation and newness on the board. I can just as easily look to the number of posts and the date of membership.

Please restore the reputation point system. I'm in full agreement with both Dayna and Tugon for all the same reasons they mentioned in their previous posts to this thread.
