My old desktop came equipped with XP. I hardly use it anymore, since my experience with XP has been less than pleasant. It has gone into crash-and-burn mode more often than I can count, and has trashed many files I was too foolish to backup. And, the number of days of my life I've pissed away re-installing XP...

So, I bought a notebook with Vista shortly after it came out. I may be on a short list here, but I've actually been very pleased with it, and it has never let me down. Currently, I have no desire to "upgrade" to 7, or jump ship to Mac.

I have 2 computers and 1 Noritsu photo lab machine still plugging away with Windows 2000 SP4, (SP3 on Noritsu) and both of them with at least 1 XP Pro driver rammed down their throats. Yes, they choke on it now and then, but a good kick cures that.

Seeing as how the Noritsu cost $250k new, though, I don't expect many here to have one. If you do, can I have your green AOM laser unit?

Windows never did multitasking very well or "correct." Each new version is a giant scam if you ask me. Slower and more hoggish of memory so old hardware has to be pitched. That and selling a new version of all its "office" junk.

Frankly I switched to a speedy Linux distro and could NOT be happier to NOT being wasting days installing this crap and trying to get it to work.

What distro are you using? I've got ubuntu 9.04 on a couple of PCs, and I love it!

You are correct, Macs are wonderful. I love all 6 of mine.

It is not totally correct that Macs cannot be upgraded. I've done various upgrades, HDs and Memory. Don't need to upgrade other components, they work just fine. Mine all "crunch" numbers extremely well. However, I can upgrade the video, but don't need to. Have two monitors on my main machine, lots of territory when working with the graphics.

And they come with some many useful programs out of the box.

Have to use windows XP at work. Prefer Mac OS X over that any day.

If you like your windows box and OS, it is the right thing to have. Don't care for games except Burning Monkey Solitaire. I went Mac in 1996 and have been much happier ever since with my computing experience.

This posting is a classic example of jargon, a technique used by the in-group to exclude outsiders. Doctors are the worst offenders because they've been at it much longer but computer people are rapidly catching them up.

My translation of what Silver21662 is saying is that he has pared down his XP operating system by removing stuff that he doesn't want from it and has thereby freed a lot of disk space and RAM and saves time on booting up.

Furthermore he intends to stay on XP for as long as he can.

Regarding AMD and Intel, my friendly local computer expert who charges me a fortune every few years when some hardware failure occurs, advised me to go Intel because if there is a guarantee claim Intel will honour it, no questions asked, whereas AMD won't. At my level of knowledge I don't give a stuff what is inside as long as it works.

I have been using XP since a month before it was available at retail and with very little software problems. However, the vast majority of computer problems can be traced to

1) Viruses, Malware, Drive by Downloads and problems the sprout forth between the brain and the finger tips.

2) Hardware that is really not compatible even though it says it is, and the software drives they use.

3) Other software that is installed (not OS) can cause problems as well.
