Another new monitor would be about $150 at Wally world. The monitor you have now could be a very handy second monitor. Two monitors is a lot of times nice to have. The old big heavy monitors are a lot of times at the thrift store for $5 or $10. (If you have a big enough room.)

Is it a stand alone monitor? or a laptop? If its a laptop you could purchase a standalone monitor and plug it in, but it would cost just as much to fix it as to replace it. LCD's are a whole bunch of little bulbs. In either case a new LCD monitor is pretty cheap these days you might even be able to find a decent older tube monitor real cheap...you could also ask your friends if they have an old tube monitor you can use.

Lol, there's an old tube monitor on my desk, plus like 20 I can get my hands on. They aren't portable though. Plus drivers are a pain on this OS (it came with XP but I switched it to Fedora 10)

Not sure on Fedora but by the time the SVGA monitors died they were all using pretty generic drivers.

How about a LCD TV which refuses to turn on? The standby power indicator light is on, set was not dropped either. Only thing that happened was I switched the mains that it was plugged into off while the TV was still on, to restart another device hooked up to the same set of mains. After that, it simply refuses to respond to the TV remote, and neither does using the manual controls do anything either.

There's a lot of that going around with newer TV's - cheap parts in the on/off switch.

Not that big a deal to repair, IF you are an electronics hobbyist who knows how to do it. Unfortunately, those are hard to come by.

I know this may be a silly suggestion, but I have had the exact same thing happen to my LCD tv, and every time I freak out, and every time all I have to do to fix it is unplug the TV from the wall, wait about 5 minutes, then plug it back in, and voila, it works perfectly fine.

Then again, perhaps I have horseshoes up my butt; it would certainly explain the pain in the ass that life has become as of late!

I've just tried that. Still no luck.

Sorry it's taken me so long to notice your post, Noxmagnus.

The short answer is that replacing a cracked LCD screen is reasonably simple for someone with minimum tool skills. The most-important part of the whole operation is to work slowly and allow enough time for you to accomplish the disassembly-reassembly with no interruptions. That way, there will be less chance for you to forget one of the steps, or to lose one of the tiny screws.

I have replaced dozens of laptop screens, and as long as I follow the above rule, have always had success.

The best place, in my opinion, to purchase a replacement screen is here: www.lcdscreen.com. To ensure that you buy the correct replacement, you should always remove the damaged screen and write down the manufacturer's name and the part number that will be on the back. If you don't find an exact match on the Website, just send them an e-mail, and they'll usually respond quickly with their recommendation.

Most screens at LCDscreen.com cost $99 plus $14 shipping. Since you know you're getting a new unit, and one that will fit your laptop, that makes this option much more desirable than trying to find something questionable on eBay.
