I had my testicles removed because they were infarcted- a medical term for dead due to lack of blood flow. I never had any real pain and both nuts had no feeling- each could be squeezed hard with absolutely no feeling from them. I did get a chance to see them before they put them in little containers and bagged them off to pathology. Both were much darker in color than others I have seen freshly removed. I saw a pic last week of two removed testicles- one normal and the other infarcted and mine were very similar appering externally to the infarcted one. Pain from the furgery isn't bad-Doc wanted to give me vicodan but I told him Tylenol 3 would be OK and I'd be more awake-vicodan made me really sleepy when I took it after surgery to fix a broken arm.

Went back to the doctor today so he could remove a drain he put in the bottom of my scrotum. It worked great as there has been absolutely no bruising or swelling. I guessing after tonight there will be no need for any absorbable material in my crotch. Everything else is sealed just the hole for the drain remains- not bad for 3 days compared to the horror stories some have told about their healing process. He also covered all the sutures with a liberal amount of superglue which seems to have sealed it better as well. Report came back from patholoy on my balls. They were both atrophied and infarcted so plenty of justification to remove them. I have stopped the tylenol 3 meds and am just on the antibiotic. Everything seems under control for now!

That is very good news for sure. Always happy when things turn out for the good on the operation. Looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow. As always wish you the very best and fast recovery.

Wow! That's great. I'm still having some minor issues with the remaining deep groove left in my scrotum from Dr. Kimmel's inept stitching. Let that be a lesson to all future eunuch wannabees - do it in a hospital!

The hospital might be the best place to get castrated but certainly there are trade-offs. My doctor really wanted to use general anesthesia so it took some doing to convince him to let me stay awake. And even then, with the draping I didn't get to see any of the operation, but did get to see the family jewels before they were sent to pathology. The other issue is cost and insurance. I'm willing to bet that you could have gotten castrated by Kimmel, then gone to an ER to get sewed up more competently and then had your scrotum either repaired or removed by a plastic surgeon for a lot less than what my bill will be. Based on what my testicular biopsy cost at the same institution, I'm anticipating this procedure to run $15-20K.

I can certainly understand that many/most can't afford that as an out of pocket expenditure plus the problem of getting a doctor to agree it is a medical necessity and do the surgery. We're all in different situations and each has to deal with the cards they have available.

If I had known that Kimmel couldn't do the sutures or the anesthesia properly, I would have gone somewhere else like Thailand. I agree that a hospital is probably the most expensive shoice. I may still need a plastic surgeon to get rid of the extra navel that Kimmel left in my scrotum.
