On about 50 machines at work, I use Clamwin AV as it is not only free, but can be used on business machines without violating the EULA.
http://www.clamwin.com
Both AVG and Avast prohibit commercial use of their free versions.
Clamwin doesn't have on access scanner - so if user clicks on everything - it doesn't work. And it is too late to do anything with already infected system - you can't guarantee that it is clean.

In mine in the upper right hand corner is a box with a check mark. Right now it is green. When I first fire up, it is sort of a yellow-gold color. You click on it and it changes to green if all is A-OK.

Maybe in your version it comes up automatically green and mine it comes up yellow-gold and you have to click on it make it green. I am a cheap ass. I have the freebie. What I show is AVG Free Edition 7.5. I do have to click to turn it green.

Try updating / upgrading your version. Not sure, but I think v.8 is out. I upgraded recently but dont remember the issue number.

And in case you installed Winamp 5.5x and AVG attacked it, ignore it.
Winamp is NOT carrying a Trojan Horse. It's a false positive.
If you need the how-to fix, go to winamp.com forums, register, and looked for the topic about AVG attacking it.

AVG 8 is the latest version. It's been out a few months and works fine. In case you have AVG questions, there's a great user forum at

I use AVG and Spybot, plus two others shown to me by a computer professional.
BO Clean, from Comodo, is a great free anti-malware program. Get it at
http://www.comodo.com/ AVG Free only cleans viruses. BO Clean catches all other sorts of malware - trojans, worms, etc. Taken together, with Spybot, they give you as good protection as you can get. Comodo also offers other free software, including a firewall.
The second free package is CCleaner. Get it at
http://www.ccleaner.com/ CCleaner lets you find and remove anomalies in your registry, as well as any unwanted files (temps, cookies, etc.) or software. You can specify exactly what you want removed., It's very fast and easy to use.
