"O Mio Barbbino Caro" as sung by Anna Netrebko is one of the most moving versions I have heard.

Right now I am listening to "sempre libera" a collection of arias by Anna Netrebko. I have no musical training and I learn about operas with discs such as this one. I also have cd's by Bryn Terfel and Andreas Scholl, etc. When I hear a piece that I like I then purchase the complete opera. The education is going slowly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am looking up the references! I love Bryn Terfel. He has performed at Spivy Hall near where my mother lives. I have videos and discs of his work. I don't know Anreas Scholl or Anna Netrebko. More to discover!

Like you, I learn from the linter notes. I have no knowledge of music. I own about 800 discs but no way to play them!

I saw a production by the Goldovsky Opera Company production of La bohème Athens, Georgia. It was actually the first live performance of an opera I had seen. I have seen live production on television. I got to take my mother who was visiting with my dad that weekend.

In Indianapolis, I was a dress rehearsal of Tosca by the National Opera Company on the Ball State campus under the direction of Sarah Caldwell. A singer substituted for another one singing Floria Tosca in the final act of that rehearsal. A lunch later, I heard the first singer thank the second for dying for him that morning.

I saw a wonderful and moving performance of La boheme on Live from Lincoln Center. It deeply touched me as it seemed to touch Martin Bookspan (spelling uncertain) and my father who saw it in another city from mine but at the same time.

Hmmm - interesting question ....

I'm not sure what opera I would hear in my head during a penectomy, but I might actually say "AIDA" aloud during the cutting. (And very loudly, at that: "AHHHEEEEDA!!").

And I suppose "FALSTAFF" might be a good opera title for what happens immediately after the penectomy.

And then no one would ever again be able to perform "FIDELIO" on me ....

(OK, OK ... I should have posted this reply in the "stupid puns" thread ....)

On a more serious note, there actually is an opera called "Castratos" but I don't know anything about it, and have never heard it. Some Chinese castrati in classic times had penis removed in addition to testicles.

I am sure that the Chinese practice was to remove all of the external male organs. --FLO--

Opera like grits is something you come to love, but it can be a splendid reward.
