Why Yoli doesn't allow alcohol in the boat.

Yoli, I congratulate you for taking this stand and sticking to your position even when your guests complain. Anyone operating their own boat, even if it a personal watercraft or a rowboat, is the master of the vessel, and has the responsibility to be sober.

My wife is afraid to fly in a light plane, yet she readily will go out on a boat with friends. Flying an airplane requires training and a license that is regularly reviewed. Boating does not. According to the US Coast Guard, unless there has been a major aviation disaster in any given year, there are more people killed and injured in recreational boating accidents in the United States during any year, than in all aviation related accidents, military and civil, in the entire world. (710 killed and 3474 injured in 2006. Fortunately, boats are expensive, as the economy gets worse the accident rate goes down.) Most of these accidents are due to "reckless operation" a large percentage of which may be alcohol related. (The Coast Guard keep separate statistics for "alcohol related" accidents, like falling overboard or capsizing the boat when standing to take a piss.)

Would that we could live in a society where most people took Yoli's responsible attitude. Three Cheers for Captain Yoli!
