Basically you can do nothing preventative. The surgeon can do the removal of the cord as high as possible. That's it. Sduyck suggests a 30% chance of re-attachment. I suspect that is much too high, especially where any discomfort or pain arises, based upon past reports and conversation with others. I suspect that the issue is very over-stated. Besides, to accomplish what you are doing, you simply have to take your chances with everything that follows, including the possibility of re-attachment, and any discomfort that might occur.
