Perhaps because doing so leaves a profile and easy access to any history behind that might be a hostage to fortune?

Re: How do i cancel my membership?
I THINK I'VE GOT IT!
Personally, I would NOT ever like to "leave this site" or "delete my membership" or any of the other things I have seen people do here... to me, is sounds too much like a whiney whimp kid saying "I'll take my ball and bat and go home!"
But seriously, there just MIGHT be another, more reasonable and mature reason for someone to ask the website administrators here to "delete..."
IF I were the focus of an investigation, even though everything I have read or written here is entirely MY OWN BUSINESS and should not be available to anyone I do not choose to share it with... We all know that investigators, prosecutors, divorce lawyers, etc. etc. are quite capable of raking up anything on us these days. I sincerly doubt that "deleting my profile" here would afford any protection from some investigator who might try to discredit my reputation, yet IF I were scared and desparate, I would TRY to appear like the most boring and uninteresting sort of person, and I would HOPE (probably uselessly hope) that I could completely delete any electronic tracks that I might have left anywhere.
Though I think it is a totally useless gesture for anyone trying to "cover their tracks," I think that this rationale MIGHT be the reason we see the occaisional "delete my profile" requests popping up.

One need only stop coming here for a year and one's profile will disappear. I cull them all the time.
As for covering one's trail, this place is regularly scanned by Google. Most everything here is cached, I suspect. Nothing I can do about that...

OH DAMN! MY FUTURE CAREER PLANS ARE RUINED! Now if I sould happen to be nominated for a Supreme Court seat, or win my party's nomination for the Presidency, or even be cast in the leading role in a "blockbuster" movie... then my past will be out there and available to every cop, newsreporter, etc. etc.
Well that's just GREAT! No more dreams of being elected to the Presidency, or becomming a world famous movie star.

Just think of what would happen if you decided to go into a religious occupation.
