Yoli The Adventuress is back...

...from her sojourn in the wilds of West Texas.

I had a great time and few mishaps. I got bucked off when the horse shied at some imaginary hazard. I got stung on the toe by a scorpion; My fault, not his/hers, since I was a dufus for wandering out on the patio barefooted, in the dark, to assure myself that the stars at night, are (still) big and bright...clapx4...deep in the heart of Texizzzz. Well, Big Bend is hardly in the heart of Texiz but you get my drift. I was lucky it wasn't a rattler.

We saw a mountain lion, a black bear, and any number of creatures great and small; some dangerous, some not. I saw an eagle snatch a snake, too.

We ate all too well and drank a bit. I danced nekkid in a rare rainstorm, when the others had driven over to Stillwell's Crossing and I was alone.

I read a great book by a former stripper who is now married to a career Army officer. "I Love A Man In Uniform" by Lily Burana (no relation to Carmina Burana, so far as I know.) She was nekkid in Playboy a few years ago and you can imagine the reaction of the Army and wives to THAT! She and her hubby are stationed at West Point.

I laughed a lot, sang as I rode alone on horseback, and even wept a tear or two at the beauty of the sunsets, sunrises, the amazing clouds, and adorable animals.

We found some old Indian artifacts in a cave and we left them there.

We saw some crude Indian pictographs too. All of this was on the ranch itself, BTW.

I took "Quick Draw" lessons with a Colt six-shooter and, amazingly, still have all my widdle toes!

I learned to rope moo-cows...well, somewhat. They were very patient with me, LOL!

I played "Chase" on horseback with deer and coyotes.

Got within twenty feet of a gorgeous bobcat.

I rode alone out to a little hilltop and played my clarinet and my flute.

I built campfires when we "remoted" away from the ranch headquarters.

I drove an old Jeep in places no sane person should.

We went to Lake Amistad and bass fished. Did well too! I caught my "personal best"! 12 pounds, 13 ounces. I have it all on video.

I swam au naturel in the gin-clear waters of Amistad.

We went to Langtry and visited Judge Roy Bean's restored "Jersey Lilly" Saloon. Mmmmm, cold Mexican beer w/lime.

I formed a loving bond with the horse that threw me. I want to bring him to our slice of Heaven for a while and I may just do it. He'd fit right in here at the EA too, if you get my drift

I wandered old rocky, dusty, and grassless cemeteries and read inscriptions.

I missed you guys.

I needed that vacation.

I plan to return there soon.

I can't wait to get back out there once the weather cools...if it ever does.

I half-seriously asked one of our law partners if we could open a branch office in Marathon, several miles from the ranch. Of course, I'd volunteer to man the front desk, assuming I could set the office hours. I'm thinking five hours a week,

It was just what I needed, when I most needed it, and others have said they were relieved that I'd finally done it. According to Ash(leigh) some friends "saw the signs" that I might unravel if I didn't escape for a while.

It's not that I don't spend a lot of time in the outdoors, as most here know, but THIS time I had no guest hunters or fishermen/women to coddle and spoil; Instead, I was the spoilee.

Of course, when I go back it'll be during hunting season and I'll likely have to play Guide and Babysitter at least part of the time but it'll be worth it. I assure you I will stipulate that half that time will be while "on my own" and unencumbered.

Judging from the first post in this thread, in venturing west of the Pecos, Yoli experienced a wide variety of interactions with nature's animals, both during the live-long day and after the fall of night, as well as perusing a volume authored by a stripper, and then herself stripping, and ultimately being unhorsed by the horse himself.

What I wondered about is, since she was in close proximity to high mountains at the Big Bend, and was thereby prsumably in close proximity to coniferous forests with babbling brooks which would have water cold enough for trout to live in; did she occupy herself at any time in fishing for trout? And, if so, was the area in which trout fishing is feasible, extensive, and was the fishing good? Never heard of anybody catching a trout in Texas, but I would think that sort of fish can live in west Texas.

Not a lot of "forests" in the area I so enjoyed. The mountains are not at all of the huge variety. I know of no troutfishing opportunities there, although it may be that there are some of which I'm simply unaware. Also, the temperatures that prevail there are probably not survivable for trout.

There IS a trout fishery in Texas, less than an hour from our home. Trout Unlimited has for years assured a "Put and Take" stocking program in the Guadalupe River in the stretch immediately below Canyon Dam and Lake.

While there has been no reproduction some trout have survived warm weather and grown quite respectably. Of course, our current torrid temps and drought will likely result in few, if any, carryovers.

The initial stretch of trout-bearing waters is "Artificials Only" and I've enjoyed catching (and eating!) trout I've caught on the lightest of my fly rigs...a 5-weight, mostly on nymphs. How about that?...A nymphomaniac fishing with nymphs!

I sometime alternate the fly gear with an ultralight spinning rig and tiny spinners and other lures.

In the rest of the stretch people can use corn, prepared salmon eggs, worms, cheese, etc. BORRRRRIIIIINNNNNG!

The largest I've caught weighed 3 lbs, 11 oz on a digital scale. I caught it on a wet, using a fluorocarbon leader on a sinking tip line to help the fly get and stay down. Nice fight and tasty too. There's no point in "Catch and Release" since the Summer survival rate is often close to nil and the stockings are most generous.

Yes, Cerveza Frio con Limon y Sal, but we no longer venture across the border; Too dangerous. We content ourselves with almost nightly cookouts at the ranch. Keeps the old stone house cooler too.

There are few experiences that can top dining on *Cabrito, young wild hog, quail, venison, even rattlesnake, cooked over the coals with all the usual "trimmings"; Guacamole, Flour tortillas, Salsa, Frijoles, etc, all washed down with a good Mexican brew, savored under a brilliant night sky, unspoiled by city lights.
