New Linux Release - Ubuntu 9.04

Post by Sac_mec (imported) »

Maybe you've a PC which has slowed down to the point where it takes ages to log on?

Maybe you want to build your own PC and add the OS, maybe you want to try Linux?

A new version of the great Ubuntu Linux is being released about now. There is a beta version ahead of the launch for immediate download, although by the time most of you read this the new Ubuntu 9.04 Linux will be available. You can do a few net checks but these addresses should prove a useful starting point.

To download 9.04 (from 23 April) visit : www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

To purchase a CD and have it shipped you can buy it online at:

shop.canonical.com

I understand the latest version has even faster boot times and the latest OpenOffice software. People will be divided between loving Linux or disliking it. It is a different experience to Microsoft. You don't need to be a geek if you use Ubuntu because it comes pre-figured with stuff that you'll want and can add easily.

I tried Linux once, but my Video and Audio editing software doesn't work on it. Which made it a clear choice for me not to use it. Especially with majority of my income is from working with music and video for people.

Sorry but Gimp does not compare to Photoshop. Also, the day I have the option to purchase the latest computer games in Linux or Windows is the day I might try it.

I hope they fixed that Marvell IDE driver issue, that seemed to prevent most every release of linux from working for me.

I certainly encourage people to try Ubuntu, especially if you are very interested in computers or are getting irritated with DRM, product activation, etc. I have a dual-boot machine with Ubuntu and Windows XP, but I use Ubuntu about 99% of the time. It does everything I need it to do, and for me (a computer science student), many things I want to do are easier on Ubuntu and GNU/Linux more generally .

Related to Ubuntu, I've heard good things about this (http://wubi-installer.org/) for trying it on a Windows machine, but I haven't used it yet myself.

I'd recommend OpenSUSE. :P

I have a few issues with Ubuntu:

1. Its based on Debian Unstable.

2 The devs always seem to be experimenting with unstable code which is sitting atop the unstable Debian base.

3. Almost the enitre distro is, in fact, Debian, but its marketed as though its something entirely new.

Its rather twitchy and irratating. For example when using 9.04 on my whitebread Intel motherboard, the number keypad doesnt respond when using a console outside of an X environment. Kinda goofy. Memory usage is also far in excess of what it should be. Just a couple of examples; there are many more.

I know Canonical means well, but in my opinion the software is best suited for developers and entertainment. For those who need a truly stable and functional deb based distro, Debian Stable or Testing are the way to go.

(waits for beating) :D

I means that there could be bugs in hte program, Just like the new windoze 7 they are testing. In the unix family they use a developers kernel witch they are working on (unstable) and a stable version Wicht is considered no bugs.

Developers are developing code (programs) and trying to let is run on the newest kernels. (that is the hart of the system)btw also in windows you can find a kernel.

In linux is gpl that is a free licence so everybody can use the kernel ot make his own system.

There are many flavours of linux. www.distrowatch.org And under the gpl licence everybody can and is allowed to use parts of other distro's.

And there is a linux taste for everybody.

Just see it as a car. there are many cars and everybody want's to have something different. that is the linux world.

In the microsoft world there is only one kind of car. And you have to pay for everything.

And the modern linux is not hard to use Just instal and it works. All drivers are build in. When you are a little conservative with cam's, scanner's and al other kind of stuff everything wil work

----asks what type of wood would be best to get me up to 88 miles an hour🙄:D

The person who posted in reply generally covered the issue. However, with Debian Unstable, its not that bugs are possible, they are inevitable....and in abundance. Thats why Debian calls it "Unstable" :-| . Not such a great starting point for a widely used distro.

At any rate, as the previous poster pointed out....to each his own. (But if you want deb to work...use Debian😄)

Love,

Ibn :)
