Re: Winter Time - repost of old joke
It is a law of nature that furnaces always quit on the coldest day of the year.
The coldest weather I ever experienced was -38C but since the scales meet at 40 I guess it doesn't make that much difference.
Apropos of nothing, I was in Biggar Saskatchewan at the time, outside of town they have a sign that says "New York is big but this is Biggar"
(and no, I'm not making this up, Google it.)
I can understand Minnesotans pain. I was in Winnipeg Manitoba once in September - it snowed.

One of my aunts was a teacher at a school up in Alaska when my cousin was an infant. They had propane heat, and had to worry about the propane tank freezing in the winter, which would stop them from getting heat... Since they couldn't use an electric blanket on an infant (they leak...
) they used it to wrap the propane tank instead.

There is a reason I turn my heater on in mid-September for at least a few minutes. If it's not working, I want to know BEFORE it's cold outside, and get it fixed.
I don't miss the first snow of the year happening about September 15th in Wyoming, where in the winter time it warms up when it snows.

It has been T-shirt weather here in Minnesota. Highs in the low 50s, lows in low 30s. When I was in Norway in August, everyone was wearing jackets, sweaters, etc., with average daytime temperatures 75F. I was in T-Shirts and shorts -- they all thought I was crazy. They may be right, but I ain't donning my Norwegian sweater til it gets closer to zero F.
I just signed a deal to remodel my bathroom. Probably won't happen until January or so. Gonna be a few days with a porta-potty in the back yard for 2-3 days, average January temperature of -20F. They will be QUICK shits. But I have been wanting a new bathroom for a long time, and I can afford it, so why wait.

Here in Indiana, the much-celebrated Covered Bridge Festival starts this coming Friday afternoon. It's always the second weekend in October, through the next one. Since 1984, I have seen heat indexes near 100F, and some years, snow and wind chills below freezing. This year, it looks to be sunny and clear with highs from 50F some days to about 70 on others.
Like LT, I fired up my furnace back in early September to make sure it works. It does, although I do have a maintenance check scheduled any time now.
Other than that, I feel like changing my Avatar to the movie posted for the film "The Money Pit," with the way things are going here with this house.

Before reading this thread, I had no idea that "-40F = - 40C".
Let's check (I've always loved math):
convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
C=(F-32)/1.800
convert Celsius to Fahrenheit
F = C* 1.8000 + 32.00
_ _ _
Example 1: if F=-40,
C=(F-32)/1.800=(-40-32)/1.8=-72/1.8=-40
Example 2: if C=-40,
F = C* 1.8000 + 32.00=-40*1.8+32=-72+32=-40
Let's check (I've always loved math):

After the furnace in my last house decide to stop working in Mid-December, and it took me 2 weeks to get the parts to fix it, I've been conscious of having any furnace I own checked in September. It's no fun living in a house near freezing for over a week. Though I probably ate better/healthier than I had in a long time, because I suddenly took an interest in cooking about 7PM each evening. I also would stay in that kitchen as long as I could each night during that episode. It was the best insulated area of the house after I remodeled it and installed insulation and vapor barrier while I had the walls open.
I sold that house. Now I live in a newly built home. No problems with insulation now.
Re: Winter Time - repost of old joke
Winter is also the best time to run the self-cleaning feature of you modern stove/oven, too. Warms the place right up!
I know what you mean about insulation. I just had a room remodeled here, and there was 0 insulation in the walls, with the exception of what they called "insulation board" from the 1940's. That problem is fixed, with the 2 layers of wood paneling removed, and moisture coated 3/4" drywall put in.

That is only a good idea if you run the cycle on a regular basis, so you are starting with an almost clean oven... If it's dirty it may warm the place up, but you'll be smoked out of it.... (Ask how I know....

Yes, I made that mistake. I also had so vacuum a lot of white "volcanic ash" out of it afterwards!
