Hi everyone,
I just watched episode 3 of "Transsexual Hospital" and Marci Bowers, the reconstructive surgeon, said that having an orchi prior to GRS/SRS did not change the outcome as long as the scrotum was not removed.
I have previously heard anecdotes to the effect that prior orchi's would cause atrophy of the scrotum and this turns out not to be true. Many transsexuals could benefit from prior orchi's both as the emotional relief and the lower doses of hormones required after orchiectomy. People need to know that orchi's are ok, especially if GRS/SRS is not in the immediate future.

Re: Orchiectomy does not affect GRS/SRS outcomes
Hi Elizabeth,
It is true, Marci Bowers has no problem working with GRS candidates who have undergone castration. She spoke at a Trans Health Fair in a near-by city earlier this year. Someone else mentioned to me that Transsexual Hospital is an interesting documentary. I don't get cable TV, so I probably cannot watch it.
Other GRS surgeons may have their own opinions about this. It is always best to check with surgeons you may be interested in to find out first-hand what their own recommendations are. They do not all use the same techniques for GRS.
Thanks for pointing out that an orchiectomy is a good option for those MtF transssexuals who do not anticipate having GRS in the short-term. The advantage of going to a lower estrogen dose is significant and reduces the risk of complications.

Danya (& Others) you can download Sex Change Hospital by using Google. Search BitTorrent Sex Change Hospital and you should find a few places to get it. BTW I mailed you a disk? Dig that out its very interesting.
The part that I enjoyed was the F2M surgery and where Dr Bowers was talking about the testicular implants and she said "I don't think anyone comes in here wanting SMALL" Well DUH! Why is it that the only one who gets that is a women????

Re: Orchiectomy does not affect GRS/SRS outcomes
Hi Elizabeth,
As one who just recently had the GRS procedure with Marci Bowers and my orchi with Dr. Kimmel 2-1/2 years previously, there is no problem as long as you retain your scrotum.
When Marci did my pre-surgery exam, she said to me "unless you had an orchi, you got cheated." I explained to her that I had. We both had a good laugh!
The results of my GRS came out prefect. Even my local doctor was quite impressed the first time he examined me...so, no problem.
