It is an accepted historical fact that the Sumerians, one of the oldest known civilizations, used to punish criminals by hanging them by their genitals from a tree. A knife was then placed in the victim's hand; if he chose to, he could free himself by self-castration.

(Incidentally, many sea-faring cultures used a variation of this technique: a weighted chain was wrapped around the prisoner's balls, then he was handed a knife and tossed overboard.)

There were other cultures who used this when punishing a sex offender. The offender would be given a knife by the victim but it was not neccessaroly very sharp. That was up to the victim. The eunuch was then a slave of the victim! This was the Hittites treatment of sex offenders

I think those stories about the penis/testicles nailed to the burning building/stump are just different versions of an urban legend, as I've heard three versions from friends before; one while living in China, surprisingly. It was this story that first interested me in penectomy. The first time I heard it was from a girl back in Junior High. Shortly afterward I looked up the subject on the internet and discovered the Eunuch Archive (although I hate to admit that there have been fourteen year old kids lurking here). Does anyone know how old the Archive is anyway? I know I've read before, but can't remember. I believe I've been here since 1995.
