I see the New Posts feature here is set on the "Inactivity/Cookie Based" option; would you consider using a database option? I know this is somewhat processor intensive but with only a few registered members logged in at any time I doubt there would be much of a problem. There could be a problem with storage of all the databases for each member but you could run a quick experiment to see if these databases already exist (and I suspect they do):

vBulletin Options > General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type;

Set to "Database (no automatic forum marking)"

vBulletin Options > General Settings > Database Read Marking Limit;

Set to "10"

Check your New Posts and see if the list goes back 10 days (assuming you don't read every post).

If you do have posts going back 10 days (or so) then the databases already exist and there's no economizing by using the Inactivity/Cookie Based option. If the databases do not exist then you may wish to check your server statistics both ways to see if they are taking up too much space. The number of days specified has no effect on the database size.

If you wish to offset any increased processor activity resulting from such a change I see three ways to economize:

Change Who's Online refresh rate, this seems to be set at one minute, you could set it to 3 or 5 minutes.

vBulletin Options > Who's Online Options > Who's Online Refresh Period:

Set to 180 or 300 seconds.

Remove guests from Who' Online listing, I believe this is very server intensive, especially when you have about ten times as many guests as members:

vBulletin Options > Who's Online Options > Who's Online Display Guests;

Set to "no".

Eliminate the Currently Active Users feature at the bottom of the thread listing for each forum. Perhaps this is used by people here but I doubt it.

vBulletin Options > Forum Display Options (forumdisplay) > Show Users Browsing Forums;

Set to "no".

Sorry to make my first post a complaint but I'm having a hard time catching up here with the present New Posts settings as they are.

Sorry, our system works just fine the way it is. We are not planning any changes to it. We don't adjust to the few. We have tens of thousands of hits here every day, forums and story board; we hew to the most common denominator.

I'm not asking it as a personal favor, I think all registered user would benefit. About 90% of the people viewing here are guests and since they don't have access to New Posts they wouldn't affect server activity.

I’m probably asking to be smacked down, but I also am frustrated by the “new post” section. In the past, I seem to remember it worked differently, more like a new thread than new post. Threads would appear, stay for awhile, and then disappear to the twenty some forums, never to be seen again. Now it shows all new posts even to long dormant threads, which I enjoy, but threads can pop up on the new post page for only a few hours before being displaced back to the forums. It can be a challenge to find the thread I’m looking for and if I don’t check the forums frequently, a thread I am interested in can appear and disappear before I see it. Also a question, say about hormone blockers may disappear to Eunuch Central or General Health or Chemical Castration or TG which again makes it hard to trace a particular thread.

On the New Story section there is a box to enter how far back to show new stories (though it doesn’t seem to work in the new layout.) Would it be possible to have a similar function to show a longer selection of new posts? It would make it much easier to follow threads. Or failing that to at least label on the New Posts page which forum a thread came from or was going to?

(As I am totally ignorant of computer programming, I appologize if these suggestion are technically ridiculous.)

In UserCP (Edit Options) you can set some of the viewing options - how many threads to show, age etc. You can also use the Quick Links function on the menu bart and select "Today's Posts." It will list every thread that has had a new post within the previous 24 hours.

The database method for listing threads with new posts keeps a running list of threads with new unread posts for each registered user. Such threads in the forum listings are marked in bold font until they are either read or drop out of the list after the number of days specified in the settings (10 days for example). All such threads are listed in New Posts. The advantage is that the list isn't purged when you log out or your session times out.
