Question about using AVG

The posts under "Security Warning in the EA" and A-1's little episode bring up questions )probably minor) that have been floating around in my mind. I use AVG and Spybot - Search & Destroy.

Spybot. When I periodically run it, Wright Media always shows up. This morning, I ran, cleared Wright Media, disabled the internet and ran again. I show as clean.

AVG. This morning I ran AVG Free. I get:

So at the end of the test it shows no threat. This morning I disabled the internet after the test. Then ran it again. I get exactly the same list. I would assume that since AVG says change, that it has changed them. But obviously it doesn't because isolating the computer from the internet and running the test again gives the exact same result.

Any thoughts anybody?

I got this on a brand new system (naked new hard drive, no internet) when I installed AVG from a CD-R.

It's a glitch with AVG doing it's thing.

AVG in fact changes registry settings, sometimes, then tells you in "computer language" that it did it.

Of all the anti-virus stuff out there, I very much like AVG the best. I'd love to buy their full suite, but unfortunately, can't afford it right now.

If you want to doulble check try one of the free virus searches as well...just go to google and do a search for free virus scan...

also, never allow a site to install anything unless you trust that site.

Does this really work? I thought this was just a way to get something nasty in your system.

This is really good point... Problem is, that in modern days users first click 'OK' and only then try to read the message...

(No offence, just observation from working assistant teacher in a computer lab).

I have used online free virus scans, but they must have software for sale in a retail store!

Read then click!

I moonlight as a computer repairman... I do factory authorized onsite (home/office) warranty repairs on HP, Compaq, Toshiba...

Personally, I use AVG on most of my 14 home systems.

Both seem to do the job.

Spybot search & destroy in conjunction with Windows Defender also works well for me.

On about 50 machines at work, I use Clamwin AV as it is not only free, but can be used on business machines without violating the EULA.

Both AVG and Avast prohibit commercial use of their free versions.

As long as we are talking about AVG, let me ask this. There is the little song and dance you have to go thru when you boot up your computer. Go to AVG, click on the yellow check in the upper right hand corner and - usually - it turns green if everything is OK.

Now, the question is this. If you are a computer twit, you might think clicking on the yellow check is "turning on" AVG. Or you might think it is just a tool to quickly see if you are current and that AVG still works with the yellow check.

Which is it?
