While my musical tastes are very eclectic, Cajun Music (

and Zydeco ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zydeco) are definitely among my favorites. They are certainly related genres, but have significant differences.

My entry was through Cajun Music, both by knowing one of the great Cajun scholars, Barry Jean Ancelet, but also through the popularity of Michael Doucet ( http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/music/mdoucet.htm) and his group Beausoleil in the late 1970s.

My favorite Cajun musician, though, is D.L. Menard ( http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/music/menard.htm) (especially his song "La Porte d'en Arrière," which I’ve probably listened to a couple of hundred times). Other favorites include Bruce Daigrepont ( http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/music/daigrepont.htm) and Marc Savoy ( http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/music/savoy.htm). One memorable incident was watching Marc sit down under a tree to play his accordian and complaining about all the sheep shit about. The sheep enjoyed the music, too.

On the Zydeco end, Clifton Chenier ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifton_Chenier) was my entry point, but my favorite is definitely ”Queen Ida” Guillory ( http://www.cotatifest.com/Queen%20Ida.htm).

Zydeco is what they call the music. Tuff people down there. Baton Rogue is french for Red Baton. The "Red Baton" was a large totem in the ground that demarkated the hunting grounds for the natives years ago.

And those cajuns back in the swamps don't mess. The most deadly job for law enforcement in the USA is Lousianna fish and game. The cajuns have been living off their land before this country existsed. Back in the swamps they meter out whatever form of justice they see fit to whoever dares enter their lands.

I don't know; it is all too complex for my little brain. I just enjoyed the music these past decades. I have known some international stars as just people in the neighborhood. I don't always know their music as well as I have known them.

Oui, now that goes way back...Mac you may be correct that Zydeco is the Creole version. Seems I've got an album, a black woman with a white guy back up band.

In an odd way, I am detached from Louisiana. I have been here too long. I now read about New Jersey as if it were exotic (which it is).
