It's closer to Midnight Sunday, and Gustav is moving north and west very fast. That actually pulls the storm apart and lowers the rotational winds speeds. It looks like it is going west of NOLA. I have no clue why it didn't strengthen. Perhaps the water wasn't as warm in the Caribbean as the forecasters thought (they don't have that many buoys in the water)... Perhaps the High pressure cell over the Northeast US developed fast enough to push Gustave west and north at high speed. But right now, it seems that the storm will not be Cat4 or Cat5.

Now, when Katrina hit, the damage wasn't apparent until the next morning. Gustav will hit the coast tomorrow and maybe then we'll know what damage it will leave behind. Gustav can still cause immense damage. That last hurricane that dithered for days over Florida (back and forth) dropped phenomenal amounts of rain.

Maybe being without power for several days according to the forecast is the only bad aspect of the storm for me. I hate the saltiness after storms. It is oppressive. On the current track, we expect hurricane force winds here tomorrow. That means outages. My power will probably fail within the next twelve hours and then be off for several days.

You are right about the storm being less awful that it might have been. Several factors influence this. One the storm is moving fast. It is moving fast because the low that is the storm is near a nearby high to the immediate east that is pulling the storm north. This is because highs move clockwise.

This fast movement prevents the storm from sitting over hot water in the Gulf of Mexico and pulling as much energy as a slower moving storm would devour. A second low to the west of us is pulling counterclockwise drier air from the Midwest. That dry air denies the hurricane some of the power it might otherwise have.

Power outages are beginning. Gustav is tracking a bit more to the west of us than predicted but we are in the cone. Avoid rumors about what happens. We seem to have fewer of them during Gustav than during Katrian. The roar fascinates me.

I was relieved to read that Gustav has weakend and the latest news suggests no levees in New Orleans may be topped. I know people who live in the city by Lake Ponchartrain. Haven't seen them in years but I am still concerned.

I was always fascinated by the roar of hurricanes, too, Blaise. I am glad you are in Baton Rouge riding out the storm and away from the coast. Hope you can get back home soon.

So am I! The flood walls are topping in New Orleans but they apparently are designed to do just that. The flood gates are still under constuction. I suspect the worst flooding might come from rain. The pumping stations seem more reliable for Gustav than for Katrina. I am watching images of the Industrial Canel. The water is high but the levee seems to hold.

I have never been in or near a Hurricane, I can only imagine what it would be like. I have been in a couple Typhoons, I understand there about the same. The one we had in Okinawa was on the edge or off center but the one at Clark AB in the Philippines we were dead center. It was strange after 2 days of storm all was calm, we went out cleaned up the courtyard a bit and played touch football then back inside for another 2 days of storm.

I just got off the telephone with Blaise. Telephone and water are the only utilities that are working. He said that the power went off at about noon and Baton Rouge is now absolutely pitch dark. Damage at his apartment complex is minimal – two very large oak trees went over in the wind, but didn't seem to damage much more than a few cars.

He has his window open and cannot see any light outside. He said that it's so dark that he can't even see his own hand if he holds it up.

He thanked everyone for their prayers to move the storm away from New Orleans, but wondered if we had, instead, re-directed it toward Jimmy Swaggart, who's only about a mile from where Blaise lives.

Blaise thanks everyone for their concern and will be back on line when the power returns (in a day or so).
