Suggestion on learning more about opera: A National Public Radio affiliate in Knoxville, TN, has a program on Monday nights at 9pm called "Echoes of a Golden Age" hosted and produced by one of the on-air personalities, Daniel Berry. Berry is a knowledgeable and erudite person on musical matters and he covers a broad range of music, but particularly opera...and I think he must have one of the largest collections of opera music -- from old 78 records through the modern CDs -- anywhere in the country. I think the station allows streaming on your computer, so check it out at:

"O Mio Barbbino Caro" as sung by Anna Netrebko is one of the most moving versions I have heard.

Right now I am listening to "sempre libera" a collection of arias by Anna Netrebko. I have no musical training and I learn about operas with discs such as this one. I also have cd's by Bryn Terfel and Andreas Scholl, etc. When I hear a piece that I like I then purchase the complete opera. The education is going slowly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do something like about music, literature, and visual arts. Bryn Terfel is a great singer. He lives on a farm in Wales (home of many great opera stars). He performed at Spivy Hall about five miles from where my mother lives.

I had never heard Cosi until one day when my former wife and I heard a Metropolitan Opera broadcast (I suppose around 1990-91). We knew it was Mozart but not the name of the opera. Just enchanted as we drove around southern Cajun Louisiana one rainy Saturday afternoon.

Sometimes I read about an opera and then listen to it.

There are so many operas I've never heard, but I'm partial to those of Mozart and Wagner (mainly the Ring Tetrology), if that pairing isn't a contradiction.

Idomeneo, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, Le Nozze de Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi fan Tutte, La Clemenza di Titto, Die Zauberflote.

Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried, Gotterdammerung. I can also enjoy Der fliegende Hollander, Tannhauser, and Die Meistersinger, but I've never been able to get far into Lohengrin or Parsifal.

And then of course there's Joe Green (Giuseppe Verdi), who wrote so many masterpieces. Otello is a favorite.

I'm with you on most of these choices. I love Joe Green's Othello. I am not that fond of the early Wagner, but most of the late works are incredible. I could never get into Parsifal. I like the operas of Richard Strauss. I think that he had a good ear for theater.

I'm surprised that this thread has reached 36 posts without anyone noting that in the 17th and 18th centuries it was more or less mandatory for one or more of the leading roles in any opera to be written for a castrato.
