Am I the Only One Who Has to Hear Noise To sleep
Am I the Only One Who Has to Hear Noise To sleep.?.?.?
I've lived all my life sleeping with a box fan.. It's loud and I love it.. But when it comes to sleeping somewhere else (camps, other ppl's house, etc..) I can't sleep at all..
I was just wondering if anybody else experiences this, too.. And I don't mean like a quiet ceiling fan, either..
Just curious,
Thanks

I have to have music playing, or I can't go to sleep without a sleeping pill. I'm also used to a small fan.

Steady state noise puts me to sleep. When I worked at a photographic studio and was processing color prints the noise from the blower at the end of the machine would cause me to drift off. Not good for work. The sound of jet engines also cause me to fall asleep. Also the drone of a monotone conducting a meeting can put me to sleep. At night I fall asleep to music.

I too have to hear noise to fall to sleep. Either the fan or a radio playing.

When I was living in a shared house I shared my room with my three computers - ever since then I've needed the sound of a pedestal fan, or my laptop to get me to sleep (it has a dedicated space on the bedside table)

I'm not the only one? Yayyyyyy!
When I really and truly want to sleep for more than an hour or so, I turn on the Bose Wave in my BR, tuned to either a conservative talk radio station or some classical music...just loud enough to hear.
When we go to the ranch or coastal cabin, (I keep a Bosie Wosie at each) I select a CD and do the same drill UNLESS...it's raining and/or the wind is blowing. I much prefer Mother Nature's lullabyes.
One nice thing re the coast is that one can hear ships' horns and, sometimes, the distant throb of their engines (She said "THROB"!!!
), so well as foghorns and clanging buoys. Lovely. Surf noise is dreamy too.
At the ranch the coyotes often sing me to sleep. They are the true Children Of The Night.

One night, as I pondered, weak and weary, the Raven didn't show (Sorry, Poe.) but the coyotes assembled on a little hill about 1/2 mile from the ranch house. There was a full moon (but my nightie covered it). I walked out onto the veranda and listened as they had choir practice and a pre-hunt pep rally.
Ash(leigh) remained post-Sapphic lovemaking comatose in our warm bed but I stood outside, barefoot in my flannel nightie, the chill October night breeze carrying the music to me. I wasn't the least afraid. It was magic.
After the chorus subsided and the coyotes charged off in pursuit of some hapless "dinner" I went back inside and woke Ash(leigh) with little kisses (and cold little feet...heehee) and said "Tell me a scary story!"; She did, it was very short, but it WAS scary. It went like this...
"If you don't get those cold feet off me and shut up I'm gonna kill you!"
Well, it WAS scary!

Re: Am I the Only One Who Has to Hear Noise To sleep
I sleep like a log. A bomb could go off after drinking a huge cup of coffee and I'd go right to bed. Either way, heavy noise dead quiet, background noise sleeping on a tour bus with the band practicing...I nod right off in my little corner of the world.
Running is great for subconcious control of the nervous system. So if you have trouble sleeping I would suggest increasing the length of your cardiovascular workout and increasing the intensity.
I never let my thoughts run out of control and stress me out. Make peace with god I suppose. But more than two beers and I'm up all night.
If you do have trouble sleeping try doing vagal manuvers (except people with cardiac problems or on medications, using drugs etc.) And Yoli that's vagal not kagal! You start doing your kagals you'll just be up all night none of us will be able to sleep.
not medical advice, these are things that have worked for me personally!

I'm exactly the opposite. I need quiet to fall asleep. My wife can't fall asleep without the TV on. I wait until she starts snoring and get up to turn it off before the timer, which she usually has set for an hour. This wakes her up, usually with cursing. Finally, after the TV shuts off I drift off. The next morning my wife complains that my snoring kept her up. Can't win.

Re: Am I the Only One Who Has to Hear Noise To sleep
I like a little noise, such as a fan when I'm sleeping. Once upon a time I slept right over an engine room I slept well but I would note when the engines changed direction or speed. If the engines stopped or suddenly went full astern I would wake right up, fully alert and ready to go. --FLO--
