Violence vs. Sex

Post by BossTamsin (imported) »

Yes, this isn't quite the correct forum. Apologies. However it is in the same forum as the post which raised this question, and I'm sure some people out there can post links to reports which will make this on-topic.

I have an easy question, one which I'd like to see how the family here answers. Here goes:

Which is more harmful to a child's development: watching two people who love each other consummate their love, or watching someone get cut down in a hail of gunfire?

This is an important question, and one I feel our society answers the wrong way. Look at games like Grand Theft Auto, Quake, Halo, even Warcraft. Despite 'parental guidelines', these games are often played by kids. All of them revolve around violence and killing. Look at the news, TV shows, and movies. How many of them glorify death and destruction? And yet all of this seems acceptable for some reason. The top movie today, with a mere PG-13 rating, is The Dark Knight. In the opening sequence alone, how many people are shot and killed? If you took the movie, and replaced all the violence with nudity and sex, is there anyone out there who would think they would rate the movie with anything less than an R, if not an X?

Why is showing someone getting their head blown off with a shotgun considered less damaging to children than even full-frontal nudity?? Can someone please explain this to me?

Several decades, I had a close friend who had a wife and five kids, 2 girls and 3 boys. The entire family routinely slept naked. On Saturday mornings, all the kids would join Mommy and Daddy in bed. I don't know if there was any sex involved or not. (No, I wasn't there, but I did see some candid Polaroid photos of the family romping naked in the bedroom.)

Today, this sort of behavior would get you arrested and jailed and the kids put in foster homes....

Exposing kids to excessive violence is harmful. Clearly the videogame folks are deliberately pushing the envelope in order to make big $$$. Oh yeah, in some of the games, you can have sex with the women or witness a rape scene.

Mommy and Daddy doing what comes naturally with the kiddies watching is one thing. Hard core porn and violence is quite another.

Don't forget the episode of "King of the Hill" when Hank Hill accidentally walked in on his mother and her boyfriend having sex, and he went blind for several days. I think I can understand the concept....

Blame the Puritans...it's certain religions that make sex/the body "harmful" I think it's easier to understand why sex is censored as opposed to why violence is allowed.

People I have sex with have gone blind for several days. I don't think it's from excitement. --FLO--

If you believe the bible, wasn't it SATAN who made Adam & Eve ashamed of their nakedness after eating the forbidden fruit? So why is modesty a christian/muslim virtue? Seems they would want to just run around naked to piss Satan off!

While neither may be good, I know which one I'd rather children be exposed to. (And before you jump down my throat, I do NOT mean involved in, nor do I mean pornos.) If violence leads to more violence, and children imitate what they see, I'd much rather they see love, tenderness, and caring. Virtually everyone will experience love and sex, and we'd likely be better off exposing them to that than to killing, murder, rape, carjackings.... Even if you disagree, honestly can exposing them to the beauty of life turn out worse than the exposure to death, violence and destruction has been?

Its INSANE! Violence mass murder and such should be as XXX as any pornography. I think there should be a ban on TV programs that are just "CRAP" which is 99.95% of them. No original ideas. Lousy acting. Just garbage. How fast can Arnold pull the trigger on his machine gun? Hey and I LIKE guns... Its just rubbish...

If they had programs with the slightest redeeming bit going for them I think I would faint.
