I am sad to announce that Larry Townsend, gay leather activist and
author, passed away at the age of 77. He wrote "The Leatherman's
Handbook" (1972), the classic primer on kinky gay sex, as well as a
score of gay leather novels and a leather advice column. Mr.
Townsend's long-time friend, author Jack Fritscher, wrote this
obituary:
Larry Townsend
"Legendary"
27 October 1930 - 29 July 2008
---
I use to read his columns all the time in Drummer and Mach when I was younger, and was privileged to meet him once hear in San Diego. I can say he was a very nice person, and soothed what fears I did have concerning alternative lifestyles. He was truly a great slave for his Master, and should be considered an icon for all that fall into this lifestyle we promote.

Re: Larry Townsend
I read "The Leatherman's Handbook" in '86. It was quite an eye opener. Subsequent references to Townsend's work have cropped up along the way leading me to believe he is indeed -Legandary-
RIP Larry Townsend.

Re: Larry Townsend
In the Leatherman's Handbook there was a chapter on castration. If I could find my copy and I tossed it down it would open to that chapter. He urged men to keep it as a fantasy, whoops.
Rest in Peace Larry and thanks for the information.
