Re: New LA Chemical Castration Law
I think your forgetting the Victims in this. Everyone with hormones has sexual urges and needs. When we get past puberty most of us mature enough to do rational and acceptable things when we get the "urge" Sex offenders don't. There maybe reasons. Mental health issues, being raised by sex offenders and "trained" to participate etc but the end result is danger to society.
Child molesters who are chemically castrated might well loose the urge but who insures they take their meds? And if they were surgically castrated who insures they don't use hormones? I'm not saying there is not some way to do this. Maybe implants of some sort of drug or long lasting injections or a virus thing? But I would want that system to be really well thought out and fool proof.
I think as a society we have to protect people from criminals. In my opinion close supervision of child molesters (jail or group or?) is required when you have someone who is seeking to harm little kids.
And if I sound like the REAL Mr T so be it...

This has happened. A Grandmother took a photo of her granddaughter taking a bath of like. The photo lab though is was pornography and they tried the Grandmother and sent her to jail. Child pornography it is a witch hunt out there.

I didn't say that. I do want to point out that these offenses or more along the lines of "Thought Police" stuff than physical criminal acts. There are some who would object to the contents of the EA story archive, for similar reasons.

Re: New LA Chemical Castration Law
I have to agree fully with Blaise. Small children (under the age of puberty) are not ready for sex or sexual situations. Real psychological damage can be to these shildren. Adults who seek sexual contact with this age group are defiinitely a threat to society.
However, most sex offender laws do not take into account the sexual curiousity and experimentation that most children develop during puberty. I do have issues with an older (10+ years older) adult becoming involved sexually with a consenting teenager. This isn't proper behavior for the adult. One possible explanation is that the adult never grew up (mentally and emotionally, that is) and so tends to seek out younger partners.
Blaise also points out the need for a different approach to dealing with the problem. Most folks are focussed on punishment and not on treatment for sex offenders. It is so easy to point fingers and make accusations, that this sort of thing can get many folks into a "witch hunt" mode where innocent persons (day care workers, medical persons, babysitters, and the like) are arrested and prsecuted unfairly of heineous crimes against children.

My mother had that come up like 12yrs ago! She took a photo of her granddaughter (she was like 4), and apparently they claimed it pornographic and it was a big ordeal at time. Craziness!

Re: New LA Chemical Castration Law
I am all for re-abilitation (that works) but I would insist that the program really work and that non working programs not be used to pretend to be making a difference. And if the programs don't work I think we need to be protected from the offenders.
Maybe this is way too simple...
For example I'm not for the death penalty because I think it would be criminal for society to murder murderers. And what do you say to the guy unjustly accused and sentenced.
*Just as I think it would be wrong to have prisoners raped who were rapists.
However if the option is to set killers free after 7 years with good behaviour and call it "life in prison" which was the norm for a while then FRY EM! At least they are not loose to kill again.
Common sense says that Grandma with pictures of the grandkids in the bath be ok. And the people trying to prosecute them given a talking to and maybe being shown the door.
Real kiddy porn needs to be ended and the people selling and promoting this shit put away fast.

I disagree. Taking suggestive photos of a child or asking a child for sex, as far as I'm concerned, are actual, criminal, physical acts. Writing a story for EA involves no real children in any way. You seem to have been complaining before that people had been arrested for such trivial offenses as the photos and propositioning, and I'm saying I find it completely appropriate.

Re: New LA Chemical Castration Law
The problem is, the atmosphere is rapidly changing. In too many parts of the world the laws regarding child pornography are being applied to fictional children as well. This not only includes stories, but drawings and computer-generated images regardless of whether a real child was involved. That's aside from the previously-mentioned reports of completely innocent pictures (your own kid in a bath, etc) landing someone in legal hot water.
While I do agree that child pornography should be stamped out, this is rapidly turning into a witch hunt. And the truth is that no elected official will ever dare stand up against these extremes. Anyone who did so would instantly find themselves accused of being FOR 'kiddie porn', and would quickly find themselves out of office, if not publicly lynched.
I also notice that nobody yet has commented on the question of if a 'pedophile' should be punished, even if they have never actually harmed a child in any way? I'll take it one step further. Should we, as a society, destroy the lives of those who find drawings and fictional tales of fictional children arousing, even if they haven't ever harmed any actual children? Even if they never actually harm any real children?
While I don't expect many real answers, I'd also like to ask a slightly different question. However that question is more suited to its own thread

Re: New LA Chemical Castration Law
Don't forget that being raped is not just initiated by a male. A woman with a tool can rape a man or a woman.
There are only 2 sure fire ways to punish a rapist and keep them from raping again:
1) death
2) put them in prison until they die a natural death.
Chemically castrating them and putting them in prison is inhumane treatment.
Chemically castrating them and releasing them into society is no guarantee that they won't rape again; natural or added hormones might awaken their sleeping rage.
Physically castrating a male and removing his penis will ensure he never uses his penis again to rape anyone, but if such a person takes testosterone HRT they might be more dangerous than ever and use a tool to rape someone or they might go on to kill someone.
To me, when someone does something to someone else that is completely socially unacceptable and harms someone else ( such as murder, rape, sexual abuse of a child) that person relinquishes their right to live freely in society and they are deserving of a life removed from society and placed into prison until they die a natural death.
The big problem with life in prison is when people are wrongly accused and wrongly convicted. My heart goes out to everyone who is, has ever been, or will be wrongly imprisoned. A very tragic thing when done innocently, but if done intentionally, very grevious and those guilty of such a thing should themselves be imprisoned for life.
You would think that the prospect of life in prison, with no chance of release, would deter people from murdering, raping, or sexually abusing a child, and it may do that. It is impossible to know how many people don't commit such acts because of the fear of loosing their freedom and living in hell on earth. To those who think they can get away with their vile acts, or who act out of impulse, they must be made to face the consequences and we must remove them from society permanently for our own protection.
