Masochists v. Sadists

The infliction or willing acceptance of pain is if not a universal, then a very common, theme throughout the discussion of castration, penectomy and nullification. This is particular evident in the fantasy stories that are posted.

Without wanting to offend anyone's religious sensibilities, it occured to me that the archetypical Western cultural motif for this is the scourging and crucifiction of Jesus. Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ" is perhaps the most extreme representation of this mythological theme.

So why do some of us want to be tortured, and why do some want to torture others; some to inflict pain, some to suffer pain? I don't know. I'd never dream of inflicting pain on others myself, but I do have fantasies of having pain inflicted on me: castration, penectomy, scourging... I have no idea why I can imagine suffering pain myself, and am actually rather repelled by the idea of my inflicting it on others.

That makes me a masochist, rather than a sadist, although that seem too easy an answer. Why do I have fantasies of being castrated, while I have no interest in imagining me castrating others? Why do I have fantasies about being a slave (and I do), but no fantasies about enslaving others? Are we divided into two categories: those who fantacize receiving pain, and those who want to inflict pain? Passives v. aggressives? Is there any gender correlation between the two groups?

From a personal perspective, as a naturist/nudist (yes, that is my photo displayed), I guess it's for me largely an issue of openness and of trust.

This seems to be an interesting subject for disoussion.

There use to be this really cool magazine shop one city away. They had everything, and I would often ride my bicycle all the way over to get the newest computer mags and such. However, the one section I could not enter was the adult, but when I finally turned of legal age I went in. The first magazine that caught my attention had some guys head in a steel cage, and it turned me on. It would be over a decade before I even saw the the advocate right next to it.

Not sure if Advocate still does this or not, but at that time they printed two versions (I found out much later). One version had adult classifieds and the other did not! The version this store carried had the classifieds which is why it was in the adult section.
