Courage?

Post by RobertKent (imported) »

I suspect this may have been one of the bravest things I've done...

Email sent 22 may 2008:

*** *** ***

Dr. [XXXX],

I'm currently considering an orchiectomy and possible penectomy and would like information regarding potential procedures, necessary requirements and approximate costs.

I'm a 34 year old genetic male in the [XXXX] area pursuing graduate studies in Biology. My interest is not SRS nor do I ever intend to transition. My desire is to continue in my existing lifestyle as an asexual and be rid of regrettable and distracting pieces of flesh. I assure you that this is not an impulsive interest but one that I've thought about repeatedly over the course of several years. I've attended transgender support groups in the past but with unsatisfactory results. I'm not interested in changing my gender. My wish is to escape my gender.

I appreciate any advice and information you might be able to offer. Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Robert [XXXX]

And, conveniently, that also serves as an introduction to this forum.

At times I lose hope and think my desire is foolish and irresponsible. Worse, I believe it might be an act of cowardice. Aren't we all born with everything we need to become mature people? Isn't discipline and denial enough to overcome distractions and any failure to succeed is simply it's own punishment? At times I fear my motives are the result of looking for the easy way out such that I simply excise and disavow things I find offensive. But in the absence of proof for a supreme god, all dogma is reduced to arbitrary and personal preferences. Despite the outrages and laments of one thing or another being "against nature," our culture is rooted and based on the accomplishments that remove us from the constraints of the natural world. Harnessing fire granted us heat and light at our whim. Computers augmented our logic and reason by an order of magnitude. The advent of heart transplants, by all rights, is a greater offense against the supposed natural order than renunciation of non-vital and unused organs. By definition, nothing "unnatural" can exist. Against nature is against reality and physics is a strict legal system. While I'm not an idealist believing in a utopian future ushered forth by technology, I believe in an individual's right to pursue a transhumanistic objective. I maintain we all have the right to indulge in self-adaptation as granted by our current technologies provided we are mature individuals and accept the consequences.

I would have been better off today, had I been castrated early on.
