Not sure how I got on this thread. I was browsing.

But anyone looking for some answers to the many questions should watch part I of this movie. It's a current 2007 expose of the true underpinnings of historical movements and beliefs. It should open your eyes to things you've never noticed before. If you're a Christian, it might piss you off, or more likely it will actually SAVE you!

I'll preface this by saying that I am not a Christian. However...

I've never understood why, if God is all-powerful, He could not have used evolution as his tool to create man. As part of that, why do our concept of days have to correspond with His? Why can't the scientific explanations of the Big Bang and the creation of our universe be the methods by which He created everything?

Two things. First, I believe the sound made by the Big Bang was "Let there be light."

Second, things like the Creation Museum are evidence that evolution is a two way street!!

Reminds me of a time when we were on a school visit to the Old Vic Theatre near Waterloo Station. The Old Vic did the plays of Shakespeare. Those theatre visits were always exciting times for us school kids and were generally organised by the English teacher, a single lady, late 30s, of considerable authority and extremely knowledgeable on her subject.

Waiting for the curtain up some girls,15 or 16, were reading the programme they'd bought between them. This brought forth the question "Please miss, what are eunuchs?"

Without batting an eyelid and with some relish the teacher replied "Eunuchs are men who've been unsexed."

Girls' eyes widened in surprise at such an intriguing concept. "But Miss, how do they-"

And then the curtain went up.

I once showed an LDS believer some of the evidence (which is abundant) that Joseph Smith was a confidence man who worked a number of scams before he hit on the idea of founding a religion. The Book of Mormon itself was apparently plagiarized from an unpublished novel written by somebody else.

I asked him, "Do you deny that Joseph Smith was a con man?"

His answer: "Maybe God chose to speak through a con man."

Coming from an LDS background myself...i no longer believe in the church. I did find an article back in 2001 in the American History Magazine at college talking about the death of Joseph Smith and how existing evidence totally contradicts the church's version. I was a member for almost 20 years before I dropped out and have only found that one article contradicting church stories. I am not saying the church is perfect, and it does have its dirty secrets but then all church's have those. There is two things that I really like about the LDS church and that is there is only a handful of paid positions in the whole church, and most of those are in the main building in Salt Lake City. Just about everyone else volunteers there time to the local group. The other item is the LDS church has no financial problems unlike other churches that i have attended over the years who were always trying to raise money to pay bills and the leadership.

Another point similar to yours... abortion.... What God has no choice in the event and he must allow an entity/soul to go into that body. Also, It says that God has to place an entity/soul into a developing baby even if its about to be aborted! What purpose would that serve? It also means that God does not know everything and is not as powerful as we are told!

I figure that if any God is small enough for me to define and discern his actions or the need therefor, then he/she/it/whatever aint big enough for me. The net result leaves most, if not all, religions scant credibility in my eyes.
