Microsoft has ruled in the past that the license key of the operating system is tied to the old motherboard. So unless you are replacing it with an identical model, there is always the chance that MS will unilaterally declare that you need to purchase a new copy of Windows to go with it. It's complete bullshit, but what do you expect from MicroShaft?

Actually I think most people could do just fine with what is available for Linux. Any way I use a Mac so I can't do much at all with windows.

Well the reason I stick with Window is that I am a flightsim adict and that you can only do in Windows.

The bad capacitors (ones nex t to the Proccessor)problem also effected IBM MB too. I was in It for 8 years and over a 1 year period I swaped out about 500 MB's under a Engineering Change Order. My compant loved it as they made a fortune off of IBM for warranty work.

As for MB changes go all I ever did was back up the bios settings and verify functionality of the pc and apps and never had any problem. All of our images where custom loaded per department so we never used anything but volume licensing so we never worried about it.

Played with linux some but to lasy to start all over with all my software. If I was going to change OS's I would probally go mac

I know what you mean about Dell quality. I own only Dell computers (3 Desktops, 2 Laptops) and 1 of the desktops the motherboard died right after the dell tech came to fix it -_-, The one laptop the LCD backlight failed. Both are out of warranty :p

Well,Dell. Last month I bought a Dell with Windows Vista. It kept warning crushing and other unexpected occurences. After spending some 10 days talking to India,Pakistan,El Salvador I returned it to Staples who were not much of help either.

The next day I bought Gateway online from Circuit City.

The computer was here in two days.It is better and cheaper then Dell and it rocks.

It also has Vista but no problem so far. It is my second Gateway.Compaq used to be my brand but they don't make much of anything...

I am glad you like Gateway. Gateway was the first computer I owned. They kept burning up. Gateway was nice about replacing them. But after a year and seven laptops that burnt up, I switched to Dell.

The repairs don't work and no one seems to know what might work. Meanwhile, I need the Dell to work. Is computer technology really this bad>

I have owned two name brand computers. My first was an IBM 486 back when Windows 95 first came out. The 2nd was a Compaq computer that I won, and I got to pick everything that when in to the machine. Outside of those two computers I have built every computer I have had.

I have even seen instructions on the net on how to build your own laptop.

The advantage to building your own you get to pick everything that goes in, and you there is no crapware to get delete from the system (unless you put it in)
