Is Vista a good way to go?

I am a system administrator for a company. We intend to delay moving to Vista as long as we can still get new computers with XP. Once we move to Vista our company will have to replace 40 to 50 workstations because Vista is a hog. You need a lot of processing power, a lot of Ram memory (2Gigs minimum and maybe 4 Gigs for photo projects) and a very good graphics card. I don’t like to be on the bleeding edge of technology and will always wait till service packs are released for Microsoft OS software products.

If you like futuristic and new stuff you might consider an iMac or MacBook. With the new Macs you can load XP on your Mac and have the best of both worlds. The Mac equipment is sexy with a clean design. If you want to play with Photos and such the Mac is a superior machine. The Mac will run some software faster in XP, on the Mac, than a PC will. Although I manage a Windows environment at work I use an iMac at home. They cost a little more than PCs but then you don’t have to buy antivirus software, have 3 antispam software programs, or worry about malware or about root kits attacking your machine.

When Vista comes with a big red blinking button that says, "Look and act just like Windows 2000" then I'll consider it.

Be WARY of any OS that carries the same name as a national HOSPICE company.

I bought a notebook with Vista Home Premium in May and I'm very happy with it. It is a pain in the ass to move files and folders from Point A to Point B (mostly photos in my case), but so far it's shown no inclination to crash and burn for no apparent reason, as my XP desktop has been prone to do.

I had to the choice of a new computer with Vista and a new computer with MAc OS (obviously a Macintosh). I chose Macintosh. IF you spend the money on a good computer (that is a computer with enough memory, etc...) and IF you have to buy new versions of software, then it might be worthwhile considering a MAC. It's only a few hundred more for the MacBook Pro.

I recently bought the OS upgrade (called Leopard) and it installed itself with no trouble.

When I had to use the computer for work, then I learned Windows 95 and up to XP ...and how to keep it running.

Go to best buy and look at Vista and Windows XP, You will find more kinds of XP then Vista and the Vista is cheaper. Makes you wonder though when the shelves are full of the Vista stuff and the XP is running out.

Old rule, never put in a new OS in when it first comes out, wait tell the next one after it comes out then upgrade. I am looking forward to putting XP on my pc.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will stick with what I have at least for a while. Lots of times something like Vista comes along and it sounds real great in the ads, of course it's supposed to sound great in the ads. But you really need to talk to someone who has used it or knows someone who has and they have personal experience with it. Again guys, thanks a lot.

I am in the process of building a new PC, so loading XP is not a problem. It should be lost of fun I should have all the parts in place by May sometime.
