I know that this question doesn't have to do with eunuch health or such but thought that people on here would be able to help with their advice since so many have had different types of surgery down there and such. I am a young guy (very early 20's) who just found out that I have a small inguinal hernia. My doctor thinks that it is a good idea to get it fixed in the new year before summer. Of course, I am quite nervous and all but was wondering if you could give me some advice (as my doctor here at university wasn't very good at explaining things and was quite rushed at the health center today). I do not want a visible scar left down there when they fix it. I know that during orchidectomies they sometimes go through the inguinal canal and since my hernia is an inguinal one the scaring and such should have similarities, right? For those who have had experience in surgery there or know others who have, what should I ask, suggest, look for in a surgery to insure to receive an unnoticable scar when healing. I've heard words like "surgical glue", "laparoscopic surgery", etc and know nothing about it. I have seen people who have nasty noticable scars from their hernia operations. The only surgery I've had was when I was six months old and so I really don't know what to ask the doctors so that I get what I want. Please let me know your thoughts, advice, etc so that I can proceed in an informed way. Thanks in advance for any help and advice that you are able to give.

HI,
Ask if it can be done arthroscopically (sp?). If so via which entry - through the navel, or lower below the bikini line.

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
Blondeboy,
You did not say in your post if you are a eunuch or not. I had a bilateral hernia repair done a little over a year ago. It was performed arthroscopically (belly button surgery) with three 1/2 inch incisions, one in the belly button, one at the bikini line and one centrally between in a natural crease of the skin. They were able to place the mesh (6" square) into position through the half inch incision. Healing was easy and fast. I hardly knew I had been operated on. I have no complications as to this day and one has to look hard to find any scarring evidence of the surgery. This is the only way to go.
I ask about your being a eunuch. I am and had been for a quite a while prior to the hernia surgery. The cords had attached in the inguinal canal and caused pain. The surgeon removed the cords at the same time as the hernia surgery and tied them off in the abdomen. It also made the hernia surgery easier because they did not have to wrap the mesh around the cord. If you are a eunuch and had the orchiectimy performed through the scrotum I would advise the surgeon to remove the cords into the abdomen. It makes his job easier and will remove any chance of discomfort from the cords later if they attach in the inguinal canal.
If you have questions regarding my experience send me a private message at jlc9292.
Good Luck,
JLC

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
I had inguinal hernia repair couple years back. they put the incision in the pubic hair line so no scar to see. if you keep yourself shaved might be small scar. surgery was no problem went in at 7am for prep, surgery at 8am home at 10am. be sure no lifting until cleared by doctor. i drove my truck three days later, very carefully but i drove just hurt getting in and out. good luck and one final suggestion, write down every question that comes to mind and ask the doctor, that is what you pay him the big bucks for.

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
Yeah, i had one of those done about three years ago...Ii was a one day event for me, and my surgeon made the cut right between my right leg and belly. He pulled the intestine through the whole in the muscle then put a type of screen in it and sewed me back up. If left untreated your scrotum will just continue to get larger and larger. In doing some digging around I found an old back and white photo of a Asian man sitting on his sac! And that was just from the interesting slipping through. I have since found out that if you ask the surgeon he/she might remove your appendix at the same time...that is if the surgery is on the correct side of the body.
Someone had to pick me up from the hospital and drive me home....i was in no shape after surgery to drive. I also had to get some cough drops from the guy who knocked me out (just have no clue how to spell it
) from putting the pipes down my throat. It took me two days to fully come around and that was mostly from the knock out guy. I was out sick for almost a month...the problem was work would not let me come back with out a doctors note, but i could not see the doctor for almost a month. You wont be able to do any heavy lifting for at least six months so everything can repair itself.
:dong:

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
HI,
The surgery if done correctly and if there are no post-OP infections leaves very little scarring.
The scar is usually hidden by the pubic hair and it is on the lower abdomen. Open Inguinal Herniorrhaphy must be used with large or complicated cases however many if not most can be done by a Laparoscopic approach.
Go HERE (http://www.utmedicalcenter.org/cms/Depa ... y/740.html) to find out more.
A more technical description may be found HERE. (http://www.aafp.org/afp/990101ap/143.html)
More information may be seen here. (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/inguin ... DSECTION=8)
Do not worry about the scar. Think function and having this done only once. I has one such surgery at 22 yrs of age. I am in my mid-50's now and the area of the surgery is just as sound as it was right after it was done despite the fact that I have gained over 40 lbs and intra-abdominal pressures have undoubtedly increased with physical exertion.
O.K.?
It is not fun having your gut slip into your scrotum every time you cough or pick up something heavy. If it is not done correctly it will return. If it returns it is much, much more difficult to repair with a good result the 2nd time around.

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
My hernia was a 'bulge' that appeared when I coughed or did much of anything... the bulge was an inch above (towards bellybutton) my penis base and a bit to the side.
It bulged out so bad one night I barely made it to a hot bath and somehow afte 1/2 hour of pain got the bulge back in.
For me, the surgery sucked; operation at 9am and couldnt pee or really get out of bed until 8pm, when I got sent home. MAKE SURE YOU PEE or they may force a catheter up your willy.
The worst part, for me, was the 1.5 weeks after; I could hardly get up after laying down (even tho 5 minutes after laying down I felt great).... and I could NOT cough or 'force' bowel movements, AT ALL. It was 5 weeks before I got back to work, but after the 6th week, I could 'go wrestle elephants' (doctors words) if I wanted.
My scar still shows as a reddish 2-inch long line along the pubic hairline, and I still, one year after, have reduced sensitivity between the scar and the start of my penis. Only plus side of that is that it does not hurt much if I cut myself on that side when I shave down there
.
I think I was butchered.... but the nurses were so nice and my doctors a nice guy, that I'm not feeling like I should complain.
I'm blown away by you guys saying you were up and about so fast after, and 'almost no pain'. Wow.

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
Hi,
I had a bilaterial hernia operation (two hernias) in March, 2006, at the age of 62. The doctor told me very little about the operation, except that it would be a 1/2 inch incision of each side of my groin. The doctor would put a mesh on top of each hole (2) in my groin to ensure my intestines didn't protrude down into my scrotum again.
The anesthesiologist injected something which made me sleepy and I awoke in a Recovery Room about 2 hours after they took me in for the surgery. I drank a Coke after I became more awake and one of my daughters was with me to take me home. The doctor said I couldn't drive for about 2 weeks.
After drinking the Coke, I went to the bathroom, hiding my behind from my daughter, due to the gown I was wearing!!! When I pulled out my dick, I was shocked because it was swollen and black and blue! My balls were also black and blue. The surgeon didn't come back, but I had an appointment with him a week later. They shaved my groin area prior to surgery and instead of having little 1/2 inch incisions, I had almost three inch incisions on each side of my groin!!! Most of the scars have disappeared since then. They are usually hidden by my pubic hair anyway.
I did my job and returned to the bed where I later dressed and had two little tubes put on each side where I had been cut where a pain killer gradually dripped into my wounds. The two tubes were attached to a "ball" which contained the painkiller and the tubes were to be removed after 2-3 days. I'm glad my daughter was there to hear the instructions because I didn't remember ANYTHING!!! By the way my daughter, love her, removed the two tubes for me and did a great job. I took a Dulcolax the first day, but since I was not constipated from the operation, didn't take anymore.
I looked up "bilaterial hernia" on the Internet and found that one's balls may turn black and blue in certain operations. When I returned to see my physician one week later, I asked him why he didn't tell me that I might have black and blue genitals and he explained that he had some problems and that caused my discoloration on my genitals. What did he do? Kick me in the balls?
He was NOT a people person. I HAD to have the operation, so knowing that my genitals might get black and blue wouldn't have made me change my mind and NOT have the operation!!! The surgery was successful and the surgeon did a great job. Doctors today don't seem to want to communicate with their patients. It was a good four weeks before I was able to drive short distances and 4-5 months before I could lift things again, I guess because of the size of the incisions?
Don't worry about the operation. It is a simple one, but just know that you might have black and blue genitals. Discuss these things with your doctor. I watched plenty of videos while I was recuperating!!
Best wishes and good luck to you on your surgery. Even with what happened to me, I'm glad I had mine!!!!!

Re: Small Inguinal Hernia Question.
I had the Inguinal Hernia on my right side. In a nutshell it is rip in the muscle wall between your guts and groin. This rip allows your intestines to work there way through and into the groin area the intestines will continue to do so until you get it fixed. My hernia was caused by moving heavy objects restocking a grocery store over night. For me the one of the hardest parts was showering that morning following the doctors instructions and with the special soap. I never had an black and blue marks from the surgery although the scar did tend to rub against my underwear and pants all the time.
The other hard part was the day after my surgery i noticed my leg was tingling, and called the doctors office. The doctor returned my call the next day and told me that i must have been grounded wrong apparently when they put people under they put a grounding wire on the body to take away any stray electrical currents. The doctor prescribed some pain patches to put over it, but at $125 co pay i could live with the tingle....it has long since gone away.
I had to go with food or liquid the 24 hours before the surgery, so by the time I was out i was very thirsty and drank a couple of glasses on grape juice in recovery. They just do not want you peeing of pooping during surgery.
Also, the gave me the typical hospital gown which made me feel more naked then if i had just laid there with no clothes on.
Dont worry about it. Get it scheduled and over with, and if you are doing a job that requires heavy lifting find another one that does not.
