As far as loading WinXP on the machine, that may not help all that much. As with WinVista, XP needs at least 1 GB to perform well.
I have a laptop (IBM T22) with 512 megs of ram and it runs XP rather well. It has been 15 days and 11 hours since I last rebooted and I have 137 megs of physical ram free.
Depending on the brand of machine, most have the 'make restore disk' option under the Manufatcurer's name folder on the start orb>programs menu.
If you poke around the menu you should find it. Many manufacturer's give you the option to use several CDs or 1-2 DVDs for the restore disks.
Be caerful with the disks once made, in many case's the machine will only make them once (but after you have restored the system, you can sometimes do it again).
I make a backup copy of the restore DVD just in case.
I personally think Vista sucks, but since I have to repair computers with it installed; I have learned it and used it since the early BETA builds.
Many manufacturer's still offer XP on new systems, but you have to talk to a human during ordering and request it.
