Fires in southern Calif
My heart goes out to thoes who have lost so much and it looks like their was nothing thies people could do to stop the fires.Southern Calif is a wonderful place to live but they will always be in harms way when the winds come as they did this week.So I will keep them in my prayers and if we are to pay more for rebuilding thies lives like some small gas tax I say we need to do it in California.

I can't begin to imagine what some of these people must be going through. Fire consumes everything in it's path, unlike flooding where at least you stand half a chance of recovering some lost items.
Several members from here live around that area and I'm concerned for their safety and the safety of everyone living near the fires.
Last I heard over a million people have been evacuated so far and the number is growing.

Gosh, what pain. When I lived in La Jolla for a short time, I wondered what would happen if the place burned. I have the same feeling about large parts of Louisiana. There is a stand of trees next to my apartment that could burn quickly in a dry period. Get the humidity low enough and the wind high and you can burn many places. Portland, Oregon looks this way during some summers.

One thing about all these fires, they will go out, then the rain comes and the mud slides and the..........well you get the idea. Its not over when the fire goes out. These winds come up every year in the fall, a hot dry wind, it does not take much to get these fires going but it does take an act of nature to stop them. The people that live there have had this happen before and they will rebuild on the same spot and a few years down the road another fire will do it again. I feel for these people but the reality of it all is it will happen again.

Since the 1930s we have missmanaged the forests and the fuel in thoes are now taking their tole on the people who live their and our resources.I cant say this fire was the cause of this but just look at the forest the next time you are their and you will see a forest a tick will have a hard time getting through.

I know quite a bit about the area that is burning, and most of it is shrubs and grasses. not all that many trees in the LA area, the one by the Malibu beach.
Also keep in mind that a lot of this forest land that is burning is very hard to get to, which lends its self to this kind of fire. But the big problem with it is the wind and weather.

Re: Fires in southern Calif
well
As a EA member in San Diego all I can say is things are better than in the Ceder Fire in terms of human losses, but the property damage is probabaly going to be greater as the winds on sunday and monday were hellatious. We had a scare last night when a local TV station reported that a wild fire had started in my neighborhood. Luckly that wasn't true. We are 4 miles from the evacuation area and 10-15 miles from where the fires are currently burning but my house overlooks a wilderness area. The Ceder fire burned within 4 blocks of the house back then (3 years ago). So it's been a bit nerve racking but welcome to sothern California. BTW at the moment there are over 300000 people who have been eveacuated. There isn't a vacant hotel room for a hundred miles of SD.
FYI: here is a current google fire map...You'll have to paste all the pieces togther in your browser to see it.

I to live in San Diego, but the fires are not even close to my house. There are still fires up on Palomar Mt and Julian is currently being threatened (up in the Mts) For the last two days the air has been very bad, and will most likely stay that way for a few more days. So far they say 1,000 homes and 200,000 acres on just the main fire.

I don't quite know how to put this into words but, considering how little warning there was, the evacuations have been astoundingly efficient. So hopefully most of the losses will be limited to property as opposed to people.
