Such an education as one needs here. I switch between a walking (leg) bag and a night bag. When I swap them I clean them, and hang them for drying. Don't want any nasty's growing in there. When one swaps back, it is necessary to DOUBLE check that the drain is closed. I now have a runner rug next to the bed that needs washing.

Of course, one must also watch out that as one pulls pants (sweats) down over the leg bag, one needs to be careful not to trip open the drain flap. I had to wash my sneakers on Saturday evening.

Some of the other details we won't go into, but I will discuss them with my nurse.

The Doc last Friday, when I was getting switched to using the leg bag, suggested that they wanted to get me some practice. This was particularly so since some elderly gentlemen use them.... Of course, that leaves me out: I'm no gentleman.

Glad your home my friend,

Huh and I thought you tied a string to the catheter and then to the doorknob. When you slam the door the cath comes out. Just like pulling a tooth.

My urologist just makes on very fast pull and gets the pain over in a hurry. When I do it myself, I take a deep breath in and pull real slow, holding my breath. it's not really fun, no matter which method you use. Best wishes.

cathaders.. oh the fun (not). I'm a baby when it comes to them, but I got taught some tricks when i was in the hospital getting some treatments for a tumor.

One, when they put the gel anesthetic down your hole, make sure they work it down all the way past your prostate.. and make sure they wait 5 min for it to take effect before shoving that dam hose in! I prefer EMLA 5% cream to the lidocaine 2% gel, but most hospitals and doctors wont use it for some reason.

2, on removal, have it clamped for a bit so you have some urine in your bladder, go to the toilet and let the water out of the balloon, at the same time your pull it out, push your urine out, it both lubes the passage and relaxes all the muscles so it dont hurt nearly as as bad..

Man i hope you get well soon, nothing like getting your insides re-arranged to let you know what the word pain really means..

Also if it becomes irritated while in place we used a triple antibiotic or neosporin around the opening of the penis. After a good cleaning of penis and catheter apply the ointment and the petroleum jelly base will melt and soothe the irritated opening and melt down the urethra making the cath more comfortable. Also the antibiotic in the ointment will help reduce the risk of infection.

Also you might have a slight burning the first few times you urinate after the cath is removed. If the burning continues you have an infection. If it goes away quickly you are fine. Oh and just in case you wanted to know masturbating with a catheter in place is not as much fun as it sounds.
