In Europe the standard treatment for BPH is saw palmetto. It's been shown in clinical trials to be as effective as finasteride, with less side effects. It should not effect your libido or cause gyno unless you have a naturally high T->E conversion. The primary mechanism of action is inhibiting the 5-alpha reductase in forming DHT. For an otherwise healthy man who is getting some amount of exercise, this means your T level should actually rise slightly, since less of it is being converted to something else.

If you end up taking either saw palmetto or finasteride, make sure you have your PSA checked and get a rectal exam before you start and after 1 year. This is b/c 5-alpha reductase inhibitors will lower your PSA which can mask prostate cancer. So you want to get checked first to make sure you're healthy to begin with, and then again get checked again in a year to establish a new baseline PSA level so that future changes can be properly recognized.

I tried saw palmetto for a few years and at a rather high dose. I noticed little or no change in my prostrate. Once I started on flomax i had a very noticeable change in short time. There have been many medical studies on saw palmetto. Most have shown to not be very effective. I know many say it helped them. I am sure you will find many say it had little or no effect on them. Anything is worth a try when you are getting up many times over night to piss. When you look at data on a herb and the effect of the herb. Look a the source of the data and their agenda. It may be self serving to sell the product.

Avodart is almost twice as effective as finasteride in stopping the conversion of T to DHT. Comparing generics, it's not that much more expensive either.

And I thought Avodart is just a brand name for Finasteride. Am I wrong ? I have been on Finasteride for years and noticed smaller ejaculations and my penis size is much smaller. I don't get erect as easy now. My balls are the same size. But I can sleep the whole night again. I do get server depression and weight gain. And I don't feel as horny now.

Proscar is the brand name for Fenasteride. You should not be getting server depression from taking finasteride. Talk to your doctor about the depression.

Avodart is a different drug.

Read the research on the various BPH drugs. I did and I felt they all were band-aid approaches to the problem. I opted for laser surgery. The urologist did the procedure in the office. It took less than an hour. My prostate was reduced from slightly over 45 grams to about 20 grams. I felt minimal discomfort, had minimal bleeding and no bad side effects, which I can't say about any of the drugs.

My bother score was 27 prior to the procedure (high is bad). Today, it is less than 1. In other words, I am cured of BPH.
