I've been in Landscaping for over 20 years. Those trees grow like crazy here in NE GA. We have an abundance of red clay but they grow here anyway. They aren't supposed to like poorly-drained soils. According to my schooling, these trees like heavy limestone type soils. Go figure. They like water but don't like to sit in it. They also have wide-spreading surface-roots, like dogwoods. That could be hindering your growth in the pots.

Have you tried scarifying the seeds you plant? (Splitting or heavily scratching the hard shell; or planting them in manure, to weaken or soften the shell.)

I've heard of folks calling them Black Locust; we have two types here. Honey and yellow (AKA Black). Honey Locust has a fuzz in the bean-pod that you can put in your tea and sweeten it. It has no, or minimal thorns. People who like the Honey Locust usually make cuttings off the ones found with no thorns. The yellow has major 'thornage' and a ridiculous amount of bean pods littering the yard every year. The yellow goes wild easy too, where the Honey is less invasive.

Never heard of the Locust tree as 'Rare' before, we think of them a fence wood or weeds here. It does have an unusual wood and I have seen it finished. Nothing in it's right mind will eat the fence rails and they are almost never treated with any preservatives.

Aren't they illegal in Arizona? I could send you seeds if I knew the legals about shipping, etc.:dong:

I do not believe they are illegal in Arizona, I have had one growing in my yard since before I was born. I only recently learned a lot about the qualities of the black locust wood and now I want to become the latter day "Jonny Appleseed" but for the black locust. Guess I could call myself Jonny Blacklocustseed, but that just does not have a good ring to it.

I really appreciate the advice about "scarifying" the seeds, and especially about trying to accomodate the root system and maybe getting them out of the tree planters. I would put the saplings that I have out now, but for the varmint deer that eat them (and every other tree in my yard that they can reach).

My ultimate (and clearly unrealistic) ambition it to someday transform my 20 acres of catclaw infested desert into a micro forrest. I figure that the earth is losing all sorts of forrest, and I will do my infintisamal effort to reverse the trend.

My hobby for this last year has been getting rid of crap that I no longer need or want. Three loads a week has to either go to the dumpster, recycling, goodwill, or where ever else. Other than that I get on google for information and misinformation about various things. I more or less try and stay away from you tube but I did pull up a few dozen versions of "El Cascabel" the other day and was tempted to go tapping it out on the kitchen floor (something I have never done since I was a kid). Also I go to the local coffee shops and drink tea usually, relax, and chat. It's as easy as that. Generally I do a lot of walking and hiking also but this year has been a little different for me.
